The Deputy Managing Editor (DME) guides the APM Reports team within MPR News. This is a national award-winning, ambitious, enterprising unit of investigative and documentary reporters, producers, and editors. The DME is responsible for the team’s complex and consequential works of original revelatory journalism on all channels. We are looking for an experienced investigative editor committed to creating essential and engaging journalism that serves the public interest. The editor will be an inspiring and insightful leader and mentor, upholding standards of journalism excellence, and setting the team’s vision in collaboration with their supervisor. Exceptional communication, expertise in investigative and data reporting, as well as partnership development are all critical for the candidate’s success. The DME will be responsible for working with each team member to set their coverage plans, goals, and deliverables. In addition, this role works to foster a collaborative team culture within MPR News, as APM Reports leads enterprise and investigative reporting across Minnesota, the region, and the nation.
The editor will be in charge of juggling stories in various stages of completion, from long-term investigations to quick-breaking scoops often requiring close coordination with various stakeholders, teams, and departments, with air-tight attention to detail and accuracy in every story.
The DME will work directly with other news and community partners on local investigative journalism projects and may be required to assist in grant reporting, monitoring, and foundation relations.
Currently APM Reports continues its extraordinary education reporting, soldastory.org, and is focusing on mental health, as well as leading enterprise work of relevance in Minnesota and the upper Midwest region.
This job will be based in Minnesota. This position will occasionally be expected to work on nights, weekends, and holidays in addition to regular working hours.
- Expected Compensation Range: $110,000 - $130,000 USD annualized. Exact rate determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, and internal equity.

Position Responsibilities:
- Manage team’s workflows to maintain broad content stream and impactful stories used for all channels
- Manage teams and process workflows as part of the MPR News/APM Reports editorial leadership team; ensure assigned teams meet daily and project deadlines
- Assist with determining news coverage priorities
- Participate in and help lead all applicable editorial meetings
- Assign stories and support MPR News coverage needs and processes
- Manage the collaboration across channels, including the digital team on production, images, video and graphics and marketing
- Responsible for fostering a knowledge-sharing environment
- Work on special projects as assigned
- Champion, foster and develop the highest journalism standards of enterprise reporting
Required Education And Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or similar field, or related work experience
- 5 years editing, enterprise and/or supervisory journalism experience
- 10 years journalism reporting or producing experience
Required Skills, Knowledge And Abilities:
- Proficient in news gathering, editing, and fact-checking
- Experienced with AP Style and data journalism reporting
- A proven track record of editing original, complex investigative stories of consequence on tight deadlines
- History of producing sophisticated, high-quality journalism, including work on complex topics and story ideas
- Demonstrated strong capacity for managing teams and multi-stakeholder reporting
- Experience with legally sensitive or confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment
- Ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions
- Ability to work and lead efficiently, calmly, and cooperatively under deadline pressure
- Willingness to innovate, learn new skills and create new ways to serve the audience on all channels
Preferred Skills And Experience:
- Experience with long-format and/or podcasting production
- Ability to inspire, mentor, and build successful teams
- Strategic and digital thinker that never buries the lead
- Innovative by nature and a constant learner, ready to create the future of enterprise and investigative journalism across channels
- Runs toward fire: Capable of delivering for all channels in breaking-news situations
- Familiarity with various digital and production systems, such as CMS and audio production
