Pay Range
$18.50 - $27.75Performs clerical functions related to requisitioning, charging supplies and services, preparing and maintaining unit records and patient charts, and receiving/relaying communications consistent with Hospital mission and Nursing philosophy, goals, standards, and bylaws. Serves as unit receptionist in enhancing the image of High Point Regional Health and providing general information within HIPAA guidelines for patients, family members, visitors, and staff.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Successful completion of General Hospital Orientation and six-week Unit Secretary Training Program to include classroom and unit-specific training provided by TCU.
- Demonstrates competency in the performance of clerical/unit receptionist functions as determined by TCU staff with assistance of Unit Secretary Preceptor and Unit Coordinator on assigned unit required.
- Demonstrates adequate verbal and written communication skills required.
- Ability to be flexible, to prioritize and organize workload required.
- Ability to maintain emotional stability and the physical condition necessary to perform CPR unless meets requirements for restricted CPR certification required.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations required.
- Basic computer skills required.
Job Specific Duties Customer Focus Exhibits courtesy, cooperation, and respect towards patients, visitors, physicians, supervisor, and co-workers in all personal and telephone interactions in order to create a positive public image. Directs and provides general information to customers. Updates healthcare team of patient location (i.e. out of room for planned procedure, surgery, radiology exam). Serves as customer escort to destinations. General Office Coordination Determines priority of clerical functions based on unit needs and departmental schedules. Answers telephone and relays message promptly/accurately. Collects and distributes mail and communications to appropriate persons. Operates/utilizes intercom system in an expedient manner and updates system as needed. Prints appropriate forms according to orders received. Functions independently in processing physician orders, performing secretarial tasks, and utilizes available resources when problems arise. Serves as a resource for order entry. Assists with entry of written orders. Supplies & Equipment Assesses and maintains supplies, floor stock, and nourishments as determined by Manager/Coordinator/Charge Nurse using electronic requisition ordering system. Assembles and maintains an extra supply of patient charts. Assesses, charges, and/or obtains supplies/equipment. Charges for special patient procedures. Verifies all components of equipment carts/bundles are included before returning for cleaning. Patient Records & Documentation Enters and records computer code numbers for diagnostic/ therapeutic procedures, patient data, and dietary/maintenance requisitions. Reviews/updates patient data in computer as changes occur (i.e. Level of Care, Accommodation Codes). Inspects patient charts each shift and adds, labels, forms, documents and thins as needed. Requests any old patient charts and obtains from Medical Records within 2 hours of notification of chart being ready. Reviews for completion and disassembles charts at discharge. Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of patient, visitor, staff and organizational information. Requisitions & Deliveries Delivers necessary requisitions and specimens to proper department. Communication Notifies Admitting Office of admissions and requests for transfers as they occur. Enters into computer intents to discharge,discharges, and transfers as they occur. Updates oncoming Unit Secretary/Coordinator/Charge Nurse regarding work completed and work to be done. Assists Coordinator/Charge Nurse with patient flow and throughput. Assist with quality monitoring and maintenance as assigned (refrigerator/warmer temperature checks, negative pressure room checks, etc). Provides 1:1 monitoring of patient as directed. Responds to Nurse Call system and provides customer service support when appropriate (i.e. fill water pitchers, help order meals, provide blankets, adjust room temperature, assist with television/radio). Teamwork Assists with orientation of new unit secretaries/nursing personnel. Meetings & Continuing Education Attends/participates a minimum of 75% of unit staff meetings. Attends a minimum of 1 hour of continuing education programs (100% completion of mandatory programs). Professionalism Upholds a professional working relationship at all times and adheres to department rules. Practices teamwork and adheres to Standards of Behavior. Other Duties Performs other duties as assigned by management.
