1What Is The Opportunity?
As an active member of the Canadian Bond Leadership team, you will lead the National Account business, playing a pivotal role in shaping the underwriting strategy and risk management, while driving profitable business growth at Travelers Canada. This role also involves evaluating large complex risk risks and leading initiatives related to advocacy with industry stakeholders. In addition, you will play a critical role as a part of The Leadership team in Canada helping to lead and drive business results for the Travelers Canada organization.What Will You Do?
National Account Leadership:
Lead the Canadian National Accounts unit and, as needed support Canadian branch underwriters, the U.S. National Account unit, and the U.S. Bond operation. This role collaborates with the Global National Accounts group, and the Canada and U.S. bond Claim (legal) teams to review contract risks and assist contractors in risk mitigation.
Credit Risk
Evaluate and manage credit risk with a team of underwriters while facilitating meetings with customers, brokers and industry stakeholders to discuss project and program risks.
Industry Advocacy:
Engage with construction industry stakeholders, including but not limited to customers, project owners, lenders, brokers, and third party stakeholders. Participate in construction industry and surety forums to educate on the value and process around surety products and advocate for industry changes consistent with Travelers’ overall surety strategy to support contractor success.
Fueling Profitable Growth:
Engage regularly with customers and brokers to establish strong relationships to influence and ensure retention and growth in Travelers business .In addition, by engaging
closely with customers and industry stakeholders, develop new product when appropriate and necessary to meet customer needs and reinforce Travelers thought
leadership position in the Canadian marketplace. This role has responsibility and is accountable for growth, profit, and loss of National Accounts.
Strategic Leadership In North America:
Maintain current knowledge of industry, commercial practices (i.e., project procurements), and legal (i.e., Construction Act, Prompt Payment, etc.), issues and trends in the Canadian construction, infrastructure, and surety markets sufficient to provide both support and thought leadership to the Canadian Bond leadership team, the greater Travelers Bond team, the surety industry, and customers. As a key and active leader on the Canada SLT, you will influence and shape the greater Canadian organization for future growth and success.
Specialized Training And Development:
Drawing on your experience in the surety industry and any special training and expertise, provide insight, guidance, support, and when needed, directly participate in the training and development of the Canadian surety underwriting staff, with special focus on issues around risk, and risk management around procurement and contracting risk.
Industry Thought Leadership:
Participate in the development of internal and customer-facing thought leadership materials, collaborating as necessary with marketing, distribution and legal depending on the content and audience.
Other Duties As Assigned:
The skill set required to be successful in this role will also create additional opportunity and responsibility to contribute to broader areas of the greater Travelers Canada organization.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
- 15+ years of underwriting experience
- CIP designation.
- Knowledge of the market segments to interpret, execute, and critique, on the strategic initiatives and to effectively collaborate with Field and Head Office staff and Enterprise Bond on decisions.
- Ability to assimilate to new concepts (products, strategy, processes) and strategically adjusts the direction to incorporate these concepts into the market segments.
- Communication Skills including presenting, influencing and inspiring employees around a shared vision of excellence and excellent listening skills and be able to effectively communicate both internally and externally.
- Ability to create open communication and encourage feedback that is meaningful and timely.
- Strong negotiating, decision making and conflict resolution skills.
- Sets the tone for appropriate business ethics and practices and willing to make tough decisions and foster an environment for appropriate risk taking amongst the staff.
What Is A Must Have?
- Ten years of underwriting or related experience
