Job Title:

Aviation Engineering Technician II

Job Purpose:

This Aviation Engineering Technician II position with the University of Wyoming’s Atmospheric Science Department is an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated individual to join an internationally regarded research and instrument integration team. Using their technical talents, they will support the design, testing, installation and deployment of scientific research instrumentation including lidar, radar and in-situ instruments along with infrastructure to support the installations. These instruments are utilized on the Department’s King Air 350 research aircraft, mobile air chemistry facilities and/or laboratory platforms for purposes of atmospheric and environmental research. 

This multi-faceted position will require the knowledge to perform complex-level research, design, fabrication and troubleshooting of electronic and electrical systems under limited supervision.  This team member will be responsible for the development, interpretation and adaptation of project plans, techniques, designs, drawings, schematics, and layouts to oversee the completion of projects by reviewing, analyzing and integrating the technical work of others to support teaching and research activities within the department. 

This is an at-will grant funded staff position.  This position involves working on both national and international field projects with occasional hours being worked outside the normal workday, including evenings and weekends along with intermittent travel to support scientific field campaigns. 

This position is grant funded and considered at-will employment. 

Essential Duties And Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialized technical support for the Wyoming King Air Research Aircraft, mobile laboratories, and research facilities, exercising independent judgment in troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Participate in national and international field deployments, serving as a ground or airborne crewmember responsible for scientific system operations, data collection, and flight monitoring.
  • Lead assembly, installation, and maintenance of complex equipment and systems; develop and implement solutions to systematic problems.
  • Conduct advanced troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of electrical, electronic, mechanical, and software systems to ensure optimal performance and compliance.
  • Maintain inventory of replacement parts and supplies; may monitor project-related budgets and expenditures.
  • Serve as Lead Operations Director (LOD) during deployments, overseeing logistics, safety, instrumentation procedures, and emergency response per departmental and FAA guidelines.
  • Collaborate with engineers to move projects from design concept to finished product, ensuring accuracy with drawings, schematics, and technical standards.
  • Document system configurations, updates, and procedures; develop technical checklists and operational guidelines.

Supplemental Functions:

  • Provide support to Aircraft Maintenance Technicians as needed to ensure efficient and safe aircraft operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education/Experience:  Associate’s degree in a related field, or completion of related technical or vocational education/training, and at least 4 years of directly related work experience in the design, construction, fabrication, repair, and maintenance of mechanical or electronic equipment or systems.

Or,

          At least 6 years of directly related work experience in the design, construction, fabrication, repair and maintenance of mechanical or electronic equipment or systems.

  • Required licensure, certification, registration, or other requirements:

           Valid Driver’s License with ability to pass UW MVR screening requirements that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Prepare and interpret electrical and electronic diagrams, schematics, blueprints using advanced principles and practices. 
  • Read and interpret manuals to perform advanced maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs for equipment and instrumentation.     
  • Expert level of calibration methods and techniques for tools and equipment associated with the position.
  • Advanced electrical, electronic, and basic mechanical design and fabrication techniques.
  • Ability to use specialty tools and equipment such as soldering iron, digital voltmeter, specialty crimp tools, oscilloscope, waveform generator, network analyzer using proper methods and techniques.
  • Document complete and accurate records of designs, modifications, specifications, and inventories. 
  • Advanced safety inspection methods and techniques for safe operation of complex lab, research, testing, aircraft, and computer equipment.
  • Assembly of individual components for complex systems integration.
  • Ability to be a team player by showing strong customer service, communication skills, and self-motivation.
