TxDOT’s Austin District is seeking a General Engineering Technician I or II based out of our Bastrop Maintenance Section, in Bastrop, TX.  In this role, you will support engineering projects that improve safety, efficiency, and connectivity across our region. In this role, you'll work alongside engineers and planners to assist in the design, inspection, and maintenance of transportation systems—from roadways and bridges to transit facilities and traffic operations.

This position is for ONE General Engineer Technician I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs. 

Salary Range:

  • General Engineering Technician I : (A19) $48,244 - $76,028 
  • General Engineering Technician II : (A20) $51,158 - $81,351 
 

Minimum Salary

: 48,244.00  

Maximum Salary

: 81,351.00

Position Description

 

This position performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties for a General Engineering Technician I and II:

  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Roadway Accidents/Inclement Weather/Natural Disasters-Must be able to respond 24/7 when notified. Assists in sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping the public and performing other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.          
  • Additional duties for a General Engineering Technician II: 
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
  • May train other employees
  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

General Engineering Technician I:  4 YEARS in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. 

General Engineering Technician II:  5 YEARS in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. 

(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses And Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Commercial Driver’s License at time of hire.

Competencies For A General Engineering Technician I And Ii:

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
