Software Engineer, Android Text

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 2 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
• 2 years of experience Android application development.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
• 2 years of experience with data structures or algorithms in either an academic or industry setting.
• 2 years of experience with performance, large-scale systems data analysis, visualization tools, or debugging.
• Experience with text rendering, layout engines, or computer graphics (e.g., Skia, HarfBuzz, FreeType etc.).
• Familiarity with Kotlin.

Text is the foundation of every digital experience, and on Android Text, you will shape that foundation for the entire world. This role places you at a unique intersection of systems engineering and beautiful UI, working deep within the Android framework.

Your work will span the full spectrum of typography engineering: from maintaining and securing the core system fonts that billions of people rely on every day, to partnering with teams like Google Fonts and Skia to introduce next-generation font technologies to the platform.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $141,000-$202,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

• Write product or system development code.
• Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
• Contribute to existing documentation or educational content and adapt content based on product/program updates and user feedback.
• Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality.
• Participate in, or lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide amongst available technologies.
