We have a new opportunity for a Data Architect to join our growing Technology team on a permanent basis. This role is offered with hybrid working from our Embassy Gardens office in London.
We are implementing an all-new end to end enterprise data platform and adopting a Dev/DataOps working culture. We’re now looking for an experienced Data Architect to join us on our journey to constantly align our data platform strategy to our business strategy, ensuring that our work is driven by both business use cases and generated value.
As Data Architect, you’ll report into the Head of Data Engineering & Data Platform and will work closely to apply your data management and architectural knowledge to design robust foundations that support the defined business outcomes. We’re looking for a technologist with a deep interest in industry trends and developments, and who is passionate about harnessing the power of data to drive better and faster decisions. You’ll need to be capable of working with engineering to design and build complex data environments and will bring expert data modelling experience to the team.

The Role
Key Responsibilities:
- Design robust and efficient data pipelines to bring various raw data sources (internal and external) into our cloud-based storage and processing platform.
- Define and design appropriate solutions to deliver a robust and scalable data architecture across the enterprise.
- Design a suitable plan to support the migration of legacy data into Snowflake.
- Adopt “security by design” and “quality by design” principles to provide performant data environments that can be used confidently by analysts and decision makers.
- Work with the Head of Data Engineering & Data Platform, adopting best practice methodologies to maintain a data lake archive and appropriate transformed data layers.
- Ensure the architecture supports our PowerBI reporting and analytics suite.
- Set the appropriate technical direction for the data architecture to support the Head of Data Engineer & Data Platform, data engineering and the data strategy.
- Support the Product and Project Managers to translate and assign the backlog into features and developments to achieve the prioritized business outcomes.
- Design suitable structures to support first and third party data use, understanding and designing architecture and security features which support fullest analytical capability while protecting users through data policy compliance.
- Support data governance, ensuring data structures are aligned to policies, captured in the data catalog and implemented through the data architecture.
- Work closely with data governance to implement and integrate realtime alerting and monitoring into the platform.
- Partner closely with data science and analytics teams across the enterprise, understanding and developing solutions for their needs.
- Design suitable data environments and architectures to support the Lab to Factory models.
- Design structures that enable datasets to support predictive and respective analytics as well as training machine learning and AI models.
- Remain at the forefront of industry data trends, translating how new data types and treatments can support competitive advantage for Penguin Random House.
What You’Ll Bring
Essential Criteria:
- Extensive experience in architecting cloud-based data engineering/BI/data science solutions.
- Experience designing scalable schemas to ingest various types of data including transactional, web analytics, CRM/marketing, structured and unstructured.
- Experience of coding and tool-based solutions for ingest and storage to know when either will offer benefits.
- Experience migrating legacy data solutions into the cloud, including refactoring and potential challenges or opportunities.
- Technical experience of building with various types of databases, technologies and styles.
- Experience of building data structures to support first and third party analysis under GDPR guidelines.
- Experience of migrating legacy physical environments to cloud based platforms.
- Capable of working with engineering to design and build complex data environments.
- Very strong SQL skills.
- Experience of using data monitoring, telemetry and alerting technologies, such as Sifflet.
- Expert knowledge of data modelling and different data structures and their benefits and limitations under particular use cases.
Desirable Criteria:
- Previous experience of working in a similar environment/sector (Media) would be helpful.
- Experience of architecting the movement of SAP data structures within databases.

Salary
The salary for this opportunity is up to £70,000, depending on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus a generous bonus scheme and benefits.
Hybrid Working
While our offices across the UK are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility around where you work is just as important. For this role we expect that you will work from the Embassy Gardens office in London 2 days per week (typically Tuesday & Wednesday or Thursday).
