POSITION TITLE: Assistant Director of Business & Finance - Budget and Accounting
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Business & Finance/Education Center
STATUS: Classified - Exempt, Full Time
HOURS OF WORK: 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, 242 days per year
Start Base Salary: $100,000/YR
POSITION SUMMARY: The Assistant Director of Budget and Accounting provides leadership and support in managing the district’s financial operations, including budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, grant compliance, and internal controls. This position assists in overseeing daily business operations, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, compliance with state and federal regulations, and effective stewardship of public funds. This position is part of the Business & Finance Department and reports to the Executive Director of Business & Finance.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assist in developing, monitoring, and administering the district’s annual operating and capital budgets.
- Prepare and present financial reports, budget updates, and forecasts.
- Oversee accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, grants, and cash management.
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines, and Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) requirements.
- Assist with preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) and coordination of annual audits, including the Single Audit.
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard district assets and ensure fiscal accountability.
- Support the development of long-range financial planning, forecasting, and analysis of revenue and expenditure trends.
- Provide financial oversight for federal, state, and local grants, including monitoring expenditures for compliance.
- Supervise and mentor assigned budget and accounting staff, promoting professional growth and collaboration.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education And Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM), or similar credential is preferred.
- Experience with Kansas school finance formulas, KSDE reporting, and federal grant compliance is preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in governmental or school district finance.
- Minimum of three (3) years in a supervisory or leadership role.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:
- Proficiency in enterprise financial systems and advanced Excel skills.
- Strong knowledge of governmental accounting principles, budgeting processes, and internal controls.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial data and prepare clear, concise reports.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, staff, and external partners.
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
Physical Requirements:
This position requires the performance of light work— Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The position includes occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity.
