The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is a mission-driven organization with over 4,000 employees across Texas. We provide legal services to state agencies, combat human trafficking, support victims of crime, and operate one of the most effective Child Support Enforcement programs in the nation.
This Data Engineer role is focused on developing intelligent, scalable data solutions that drive insight and automation across the agency. The position blends advanced analytics with modern data engineering practices, leveraging lakehouses, dimensional modeling, and tools to prepare high-quality data for analysis. You’ll build and optimize data pipelines, implement secure semantic layers, and apply data services to enhance decision-making and operational efficiency.
Ideal candidates bring deep experience with data analytics and warehouse tools, a strong command of Python and SQL, and a passion for translating complex data into actionable insights through modeling, visualization, and storytelling. This role is highly collaborative, working in Agile teams to deliver value-driven, data-informed solutions that support self-service analytics and data democratization.

Applied Data Science & Modeling
• Analyze large, complex datasets to uncover patterns, trends, and actionable insights that inform strategic decisions across the agency.
• Design and implement data transformation workflows using SQL, Python, and Snowflake-native features (e.g., Streams, Tasks, Snowpark) to prepare data for modeling and analysis.
• Develop scalable, analytics-ready data models and semantic layers in Snowflake to support self-service exploration and advanced reporting.
• Build and optimize data lake architectures that enable secure, governed access to structured and semi-structured data for data science and analytics use cases.
Automation & Development
• Apply machine learning and AI services (e.g., Azure Machine Learning, Cognitive Services) to develop predictive models, intelligent agents, and automation pipelines that enhance operational efficiency and decision-making.
• Perform advanced data wrangling and feature engineering to support model development and experimentation.
• Implement data quality and monitoring frameworks to ensure the reliability and integrity of analytical outputs.
Collaboration & Agile Delivery
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams in an Agile environment to deliver high-impact, data-driven solutions aligned with business goals.
• Promote best practices in data science, including reproducibility, model validation, documentation, and ethical data use.
• Contribute to a culture of data literacy and democratization by enabling intuitive access to insights through well-structured semantic layers and visualizations.
Risk Management:
• Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with technology programs and projects, ensuring compliance with security and regulatory standards.
• Assist in the risk management of data across the organization.
• Proactively address issues and challenges that may impact project timelines or objectives.

Qualifications
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college/university; experience in the following (or closely related) fields may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis: computer science, data engineering, cloud data platforms, AI/ML integration, information systems, mathematics, statistics, economics, or a related field
Experience: Four years of full-time experience in the following (or closely related) fields may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis: computer science, data engineering, cloud data platforms, AI/ML integration, information systems, mathematics, statistics, economics, or a related field
Experience: Development with two or more of the following areas or technologies: Snowflake, SQL, R, Python, ETL/ELT development, data cleansing, data standardization, data streaming, dimensional modeling, semantic layer design, data lakehouse architecture, Power BI, dashboards, self-service analytics enablement, REST API development, and/or workflow orchestration.
Skill in effective oral and written communication, including preparing and delivering technical presentations, status reports, and program-related updates to diverse audiences such as executive management, program staff, and external stakeholders.
Skill in exercising sound judgment, effective decision-making, and responding positively to constructive feedback.
Skill in managing multiple priorities, meeting deadlines, and adapting to evolving requirements.
Ability to collaborate in a professional environment with cross-functional teams to ensure data quality, integrity, and alignment with agile-at-scale practices at the Office of the Attorney General.
Ability to adapt to new technologies and learn quickly.
Ability to meet position requirements, including on-site work at OAG locations, business-related travel, occasional extended hours in compliance with FLSA, and the physical ability to lift and relocate up to 10 lbs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Major coursework in data science, business analytics, computer science, management information systems, accounting, finance, mathematics, statistics, economics, or a related field is generally preferred
Experience: Python or R code repository share of Data Science projects
Experience: Development with two or more of the following areas or technologies: Azure AI, Cognitive Services, and/or AI agent integration.
Experience: Specialized training in Data Science or related technologies a plus
Knowledge: Working knowledge of Scrum agile methodologies, lean engineering principles, and software development tools/methodologies
