Salary Grade:

  • Construction Inspector IV: (B21) $4,523.16 - $7,253.83 month
  • Construction Inspector V: (B22) $4,801.16 - $7,761.50 month

This posting is for one (1) Construction Inspector IV or V position, depending on business need and applicants' qualifications. Position Description

 

Construction Inspector IV and V

Oversees inspection of construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution. Trains others. May lead the work of professional and technical employees. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work. Work requires contact with other governmental agencies and private entities to include contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

  • Ensures inspectors turn in monthly estimates in an accurate and timely manner to facilitate payments to contractors.
  • May serve as a lead worker or project leader.
  • Attends pre-construction meetings and answers questions from contractors and other attendees.
  • Consults with Project Engineers, resident project representatives and contractors' superintendents on work progress andconstruction problems; reviews equipment utilization data and time/cost estimates.
  • Oversees construction record-keeping activities; recommends payments to contractors; recommends change orders, extra work orders/supplemental agreements; reviews proposed change orders submitted by consultants; prepares reports.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans and ensures adherence to approved safety standards.
  • Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Reviews construction records, inspection reports and records audits to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

Construction Inspector IV - *3 YEARS construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support related experience.

Construction Inspector V - *4 YEARS construction inspection or transportation engineering experience.

*Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.

Licenses And Certifications:

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions:

  • Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Required to wear protective gear - respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 pounds at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Balancing - walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Fingering - picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand.
  • Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Hearing - perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication.
  • Repetitive Motion - substantial movements of the wrists, hands and fingers.
  • Close Visual Acuity - work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
