The Coherent Aerospace and Defense Richmond Business Unit is a precision optics and optical assemblies design and manufacturing group that specializes in ultra-precision optical components and coatings. Applications include semiconductor and flat-panel display manufacturing, ground and space-based telescopes, defense systems and other exotic scientific and government-sponsored programs.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Develops new or modified process formulations, defines processing or handling equipment requirements and specifications, and reviews processing techniques and methods applied in the manufacture, fabrication, and evaluation of custom and production optics.
- Reviews product requirements with design staff to ensure compatibility of processing methods.
- Compiles and evaluates test data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications.
- Assist in conducting experiments and tests to evaluate new process technologies, materials, and equipment.
- Collect and analyze data to identify process improvements, troubleshoot issues, and optimize manufacturing parameters.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, production, and quality assurance to ensure successful process transfer and scale-up.
- Assist in the design and implementation of fixtures, tooling, and equipment to support optical manufacturing operations.
- May conceive and plan projects involving definition and selection of new concepts and approaches in the processing or development of new or improved processes in CCOS, metrology, assembly and testing.
Education & Experience
- Minimum of 0-1 year of related experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field
- Academic background in optics, materials science, or manufacturing processes
Skills
- Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and experimental techniques.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel, SolidWorks and batch files.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Enthusiasm for learning and a proactive, results-oriented mindset.
Working Conditions
- The position may require time spent on the shop floor, collaborating with operators and maintenance teams.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Safety Requirements
All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent A&D EHS standards.
