Excel Engineering is seeking a team-oriented, highly motivated?AVEVA PI Engineer?for our Mounds View, Minnesota office. We offer full service Engineering Consulting services in the US and abroad.

This role is a critical contributor to our Pharma 4.0 vision—where data integrity, contextualization, and real-time insights drive smarter, faster, and more compliant operations. As a AVEVA PI Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of digital transformation for our clients. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design and implement AVEVA PI solutions that support GMP-compliant data collection, contextualization, and reporting across manufacturing, utilities, and lab environments 
  • Configure PI Asset Framework (AF) to model pharma-specific assets such as reactors, cleanrooms, HVAC systems, and water systems, enabling batch traceability and deviation analysis 
  • Design and implement PI Interfaces and PI Connectors for seamless integration with PLCs, DCSs, SCADA systems, SQL Databases, and other industrial data sources 
  • Configure PI Data Archive for optimal performance, including tuning compression settings, exception filters, and archive management 
  • Build and deploy PI Vision dashboards and PI ProcessBook displays to support operations, maintenance, and executive decision-making 
  • Implement analytics using PI AF Analysis and Notifications to automate insights and trigger alerts based on process conditions 
  • Apply security best practices for PI System architecture, including user access control, data integrity, and network segmentation 
  • Support 21 CFR Part 11 and Annex 11 compliance by configuring audit trails, electronic signatures, and secure access controls within the PI System 
  • Conduct system health checks, performance tuning, and troubleshooting of PI System components to ensure high availability and reliability 
  • Integrate PI System with MES, LIMS, and ERP platforms to enable end-to-end visibility of production, quality, and supply chain data 
  • Support data governance initiatives by documenting tag naming conventions, metadata standards, and historian retention policies 
  • Collaborate with QA and validation teams to support CSV (Computer System Validation) efforts, including URS, IQ/OQ/PQ documentation for PI deployment

Requirements

Education And Experience

  • Bachelors or Masters’ Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical or Computer Engineering from an ABET Accredited Institution. 
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 Scale. 
  • 6+ years design and configuration experience with a real time data solution technology in AVEVA PI, AVEVA, AspenTech, Canary, or similar technologies. 

Qualifications

  • Experience working with any of the following is a plus: 
  • Creation/modification of PI tags 
  • PI AF Element templates and AF Elements 
  • PI based dashboards (PI Vision/Process Book) 
  • PI AF Analytics, PI Notifications and PI Event Frames 
  • PI Interfaces: OPC DA/UA, RDBMS, FactoryTalk Batch, PI to PI 
  • PI Software Development Kit, PI Asset Framework Software Development Kit 
  • Exposure to PLC logic, HMI interface logic, system communications, elementary diagrams, control panel layouts or instrument specifications is preferred. 
  • Interest and experience with computer programming are highly preferred. 
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) registration or ability to obtain such is highly preferred. 
  • Ability to write and speak in the English language. 
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time. 

Additional Skills Applicable to the Role 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as verbal and written communications. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively with individuals at all levels in the organization in a team environment. 
  • Knowledge of relevant technical software. 
  • Knowledge of MS Office software products: Word/Excel/Outlook.
