As part of our strategic growth, Schlegel Villages is excited to announce we are currently seeking a Director of Payroll to join our Support Office team. The Director of Payroll will oversee the day-to-day payroll activities and provide leadership to a team of payroll specialists. Reporting to the Senior Director of Payroll and Technology Systems, this role ensures accurate and timely payroll processing, compliance with legislation, and the implementation of best practices in payroll administration. The Director of Payroll will serve as a strategic partner, providing guidance to leadership on payroll-related matters and contributing to the ongoing development of payroll processes and systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of payroll specialists, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee accurate and timely processing of payroll across multiple locations.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable payroll legislation, regulations, and internal policies.
  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, and other business partners to resolve payroll issues and support operational needs.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain payroll policies, procedures, and controls to ensure efficiency and compliance.
  • Partner with technology teams to enhance payroll systems, processes, and reporting capabilities.
  • Provide regular reporting, insights, and analysis to senior leadership to support decision-making.
  • Stay current on payroll trends, legislation, and best practices to continually improve payroll services.

Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5–10 years of progressive payroll experience, including leadership of a payroll team.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, compliance requirements, and payroll best practices in Canada.
  • Experience managing payroll for multi-location organizations is an asset.
  • Proficiency with payroll software and technology systems; experience with payroll system implementation or upgrades is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail.
  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills with the ability to coach and develop team members.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, drive process improvements, and work in a fast-paced environment.
