About Multiply Labs
Multiply Labs is a cutting-edge startup based in San Francisco, California, supported by top-tier tech and life science investors such as Casdin Capital, Lux Capital, and Y Combinator. We are revolutionizing the manufacturing of cell therapies by developing advanced robotic systems designed to automate and scale the production of these life-saving treatments. Our robots empower biopharma companies to produce cell therapies at scale without significantly changing their existing processes, reducing regulatory barriers and risks. While traditional approaches are time-consuming and lead to extremely high costs for patients (typically $1M+ per patient), using robotics can make these transformative treatments more accessible and affordable to patients in need. To learn more and to view a video of our robots in action, visit us at www.multiplylabs.com  and follow us on LinkedIn. You can also read our latest peer-reviewed study, which highlights the statistical equivalence between manual and automated cell expansion processes, at cytotherapy.org.
About the Role
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer in the Multiply Labs team, you will apply your engineering expertise and technical leadership skills to design consumable components for complex automated machinery involved in the manufacturing of novel pharmaceutical products. This includes the design of robotic cartridges and adapters that enable robotic interfacing with commonly used consumables in cell therapy manufacturing (fluid transfer bags, bioreactors, cell isolators, reagent vials, etc). You’ll be working directly with a cross functional hardware and software team on designing and building the current and next generations of Multiply Labs’ robotic systems. This ranges across designing and selecting components for our robotic system, determining high level design goals and objectives, building prototypes and taking them to production. You’ll succeed in the role if you can iterate and optimize design using first principle engineering approaches. We have a mix of exciting projects running simultaneously in various phases of maturity. You will need great documentation skills and ability to organize thoughts and ideas into actions in order to drive decision making conversations on major projects while coordinating with colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • High level ownership of robotic consumable assembly design including:
  • Leading concept ideation phases using first principles knowledge
  • Detailed design work in CAD, including modeling and creation of detailed drawings
  • Investigation of applicable technologies and off-the-shelf components
  • Analysis of designs including loads, tolerance stack ups, manufacturability, and material compatibility with bioprocess, sterilization, and cleaning.
  • Prototyping, material selection, testing, and iterating designs
  • Close collaboration with Biology, Product, and Robotic Software teams to ensure your designs meet requirements for the bioprocess and the robotic system
  • Generation of supporting design documentation and manufacturing instructions
  • Oversight in a transition to production manufacturing for completed design
  • Lead technicians in pilot builds of your consumable prototypes in our in-house clean room to test designs in robotic cell runs
  • Responsibilities may also include some machine and robot end effector design.

Qualifications

  • Extensive mechanical design experience developing bioprocess consumables and/or medical devices from concept to production, including starting from a ‘blank sheet’.
  • Proven ability to solve complex technical problems by breaking them down into simpler pieces and executable tasks.
  • Extensive knowledge of mechanical components, common engineering metals, plastics, joining methods, part fabrication methods, and finishing operations.
  • Extensive experience optimizing manufacturability of high volume assemblies using DFM/DFA principles
  • Experience transferring designs to external suppliers and contract manufacturers for production
  • Extensive experience working in 3D CAD software
  • Extensive experience with injection molded part design
  • Working knowledge of GD&T standards
  • Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years engineering experience in a relevant/similar field

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in FDA and/or EMA regulated industries
  • Familiarity with medical/biopharma material selection for sterile, single-use assemblies
  • Onshape experience
  • Hands on experience with machine shop and prototyping tools
Note: While our headquarters is located in San Francisco, CA, this position will require up to 10-20% domestic and international travel.
