Job Description

  • Columbia University’s Strategic Communication master’s program seeks a part-time lecturer to
  • teach a graduate-level course in Communication for Global Professionals. This course in cross-
  • cultural communication offers students the specialized knowledge and skills needed to
  • successfully navigate global organizations in a variety of sectors and industries. Through
  • lectures and readings of theoretical and empirical work, students deepen their knowledge of
  • and respect for different cultural orientations, values, attitudes and beliefs and discover how
  • these variations influence communicative practices across global professional settings. Through
  • observation, data collection, and analysis students uncover principles that govern
  • communicative interaction and the social and cultural factors that influence “when to speak
  • and when not to speak, what to say to whom, when, where, and in what manner.”
  • Responsibilities
  • Based on a previously designed and approved syllabus, lead class lectures, instructional
  • activities, and classroom discussion
  • Evaluate and grade student assignments
  • Monitor and address student questions and concerns
  • Hold office hours
  • Attend program faculty meetings (three per term)
  • Participate in relevant training as recommended by the Deputy Program Director

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree, with a preference for Ph.D. in communication, sociolinguistics, or related field
  • Familiarity with theory and research in cross-cultural communication
  • 7+ years of industry experience in global organizations
  • Available for in-person daytime classes (Thursdays, 10:10am-12:00pm preferred)
  • Preferred Skills/Experience
  • 2+ years of graduate teaching experience

Additional Information

  • Compensation
  • $10,000 - $11,000 (for the semester)

  • Student evaluations of teaching for at least 3 previously taught semester-length courses, if available
  • Candidates who advance to the second round will be asked to deliver a 20-minute teaching demo

  • metropolitan area (NY, CT, NJ, PA).
