The Network Technician shares responsibility with other ITS staff members for the support and continuous functioning of BPHC systems and equipment. The Network Technician may be required to participate in an on-call rotation outside of the Department's regular business hours during which they must carry a BPHC telecommunications device and answer, refer, and/or respond to calls for service.

Duties

  • Provides technical support and troubleshooting of the Boston Public Health Commission's computers.
  • Provides technical assistance to BPHC employees.
  • Provides telephone support and hands-on troubleshooting to remote sites.
  • Assists with special projects as required.
  • Installs, configures and upgrades operating systems and software, using standard business and administrative packages; may modify specific applications
  • for use in programs.
  • Installs, assembles and configures computers, monitors, and peripherals such as printers, scanners and related hardware.
  • Troubleshoots problems with computer systems, including troubleshooting hardware and software, e-mail, network and peripheral equipment problems;
  • makes repairs and corrections where required.
  • Acts as a technical resource in assisting users to resolve problems with equipment; provides backup to a centralized help desk.
  • Assists in instructing PHC staff in the use of standard business and administrative software, including word processing, spreadsheets and presentations;
  • provides instruction or written documentation where required.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • A + certification a plus
  • Three or more years related experience installing, configuring, assembling and repairing computers, monitors, and peripherals such as printers and related
  • hardware
  • Troubleshooting and solving hardware and software problems
  • Installing, configuring and upgrading operating systems and software
  • Ability to organize own work, setting priorities and meeting critical time deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, superiors, and clients
