Job Description

Master Police Officer

This expert-level officer plays a vital role in protecting life and property, conducting patrols, handling investigations, and ensuring the overall safety of the university community. The Master Police Officer provides leadership, mentorship, and acts as a field supervisor when needed, operating with full autonomy and professionalism.

What you’ll do in this position:

• Patrol the BYU campus to protect life and property, enforce laws and regulations, and respond to emergencies, alarms, and hazards.
• Conduct criminal investigations, make legal arrests, issue citations, and prepare clear, accurate reports.
• Provide expert leadership in specialty areas (e.g., Investigations, SWAT, Peer Support, Bike Team, Hostage Negotiation, etc.).
• Serve as a shift leader in the absence of a Sergeant, mentoring junior officers and ensuring compliance with department policies.
• Support and secure special events, including Stadium of Fire, football games, and other university gatherings.
• Promote crime prevention, awareness, and positive community relations.

What qualifies you for this role:

Required:

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen.
• Utah POST Category 1 certification (or enrollment in an academy program).
• Minimum of 9 years of certified law enforcement experience at BYU or equivalent agency (with possible substitutions for education or military service).
• Completion of BYU Police Department Field Training Officer (FTO) Program.
• Valid Utah driver license with no suspensions/revocations.
• Current certifications in CPR, Intoxilyzer, Radar/Lidar, Standard Field Sobriety Testing, Accident Investigation, Taser, and CIT.
• Demonstrated proficiency with firearms, defensive tactics, UCJIS, Spillman, and investigative procedures.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and in all weather conditions.
• Successful completion of medical exam, physical fitness test, and thorough background check.
• Expert knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal laws, university policies, and emergency preparedness protocols.

Preferred:

• College degree or equivalent education.
• One year of service at BYU.
• Prior supervisory or mentoring experience.
• Knowledge of BYU campus, policies, and procedures.
• Ability to supervise and mentor student employees.

Qualifications:

Based on the selected candidate's qualifications, the position will be at the appropriate classification: Police Officer I/FTO, Police Officer II, Senior Police Officer, Master Police Officer.  

Police Officer I/FTO - Level 50

• Completion of Utah Peace Officer Standards & Training.  
• Completion of BYU Police Department FTO Program. 
• Police Officer II - Level 51
• Completion of Utah Peace Officer Standards & Training.  
• Completion of BYU Police Department FTO Program. 
• Police Officer II - Level 51
• 3 years of experience at BYU as a certified BYU Police Officer or equivalent experience in a comparable agency. 

Senior Police Officer - Level 52

• 6 years of experience at BYU as a certified BYU Police Officer or equivalent experience in a comparable agency. 
• All certifications, proficiencies, and skills for Officer II must be met. 

Master Police Officer - Level 53

• 9 years of experience at BYU as a certified BYU Police Officer or equivalent experience in a comparable agency (at least 1 of the 9 years must be at BYU). 

Required time in position may be reduced by 1 year with the possession of one of the following: 

• Bachelor’S Degree

• Master’S Degree

• 4 years of full-time military experience at a rank of E5 or higher 

Note: A specific degree or military experience substitution may only be used once within the Step series 

• All certifications, proficiencies, and skills for Senior Officer must be met
