Brief Position Summary
Performs moderately complex (journey-level) electronics technical support work. Installs, removes, and operates electrical power generating and control systems, automatic transfer switches, aircraft arresting systems, and associated equipment. Inspects, tests, and services component systems such as safety, fuel, lubrication, cooling, air pressure, pumps, regulators, governors, and accessory equipment. Synchronizes multiple generators. Operates high and low voltage switches, circuit breakers, rheostats, and other controls on switchgear and distribution panels. Performs electrical power control and distribution functions. Reviews and advises on projects associated with electrical power generating and control systems, automatic transfer switches, aircraft arresting systems, and associated equipment. Reviews layout drawings and wiring diagrams. Ensures new construction meets proper operating characteristics of equipment. Establishes maintenance and operating procedures to ensure maximum efficiency. Reports to the State Maintenance Shop Supervisor. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Work Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10 Hours a day, 40 Hours a week
Essential Job Functions And Responsibilities
- Installs, positions, rewinds, and pretensions aircraft arresting systems. Checks installed equipment to ensure compliance with publications, policies, and directives.
- Determines maintenance procedures, approaches, methods, and courses of action required in an effective and efficient manner, to include estimating time, equipment, and material requirements.
- Thoroughly and accurately inspects newly installed equipment to ensure operating efficiency. If system is down, promptly repairs system components to minimize down time.
- Observes and interprets instruments such as ammeters, voltmeters, frequency meters, automatic temperature and pressure recorders, and engine oil, fuel, and coolant gauges.
- Positions equipment such as gasoline and diesel engines, generators, switchgears, air compressors, and other power generating auxiliary equipment.
- Properly operates and adjusts power production components to ensure efficient electric power control and distribution to meet electrical load demand.
- Performs preventive maintenance on electrical power support systems, including inspecting equipment for proper fuel, lubricant, coolant, and battery water levels, and examining pumps, batteries, fan belts, and spark plugs for signs of wear or the need for replacement.
- Checks engine performance, generator bearings, and oil and temperature gauges. Adjusts engine generator systems to maintain proper voltage, current frequency, and synchronization.
- Changes fuel filters, oil filters, air filters, and lube oil. Adjusts thermal and safety controls.
- Conducts periodic load-tests to ensure adequacy of system.
- Isolates malfunctions by visual and auditory examination and using test equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, continuity testers, feeler gauges, frequency counters, oscilloscopes, etc.
- Troubleshoots complex repair situations involving electrical control circuits, locates shorts, and inspects wiring to ensure compliance with schematic wiring diagrams.
- Maintains, inspects, repairs, diagnoses, and modifies aircraft arrestor barrier units. Makes periodic operational tests or checks to ensure proper operation.
- Notes any malfunctions or deficiencies and makes necessary repairs and adjustments to engines, brake system, drums, and related equipment.
- Replaces and adjusts component parts such as pendants, tapes, belts, chains, gears, switches, brake drums, and hydraulic seals.
- Aligns, synchronizes, and adjusts units to ensure proper operation, including correct pressures, releases, and brake drum clearances. Installs, positions, and tensions aircraft arresting barrier cables and tapes.
- Prepares accurate, complete, and up-to-date records of actions taken and assures documentation is properly signed and coordinated in a timely manner.
- Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing.
- Follows federal and state rules when storing, using, handling, labeling, and disposing of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with environmental standards.
- Performs clean-up duties such as cleaning equipment, sweeping, straightening, and lining up tools and other property in the assigned area.
- Strictly adheres to safety and security procedures and regulations and promptly reports any observed or identified violations in accordance with established guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Attends work regularly and observes approved work hours in accordance with agency state employee policies & procedures handbook.
- May be required to perform duty in support of national emergencies, disasters, and other missions, to include on holidays and weekends.
Qualifications
Minimium Qualifications
Education:
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent (GED) is required.
Experience:
- One (1) year of experience in installing, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining electronic equipment is required.
- Experience using Microsoft applications to include Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel is required.
Preferred Experience:
- 5 years' experience in electrical power generation and control systems, automatic transfer switches, aircraft arresting systems and associated equipment is preferred.
- Experience working in a military environment is preferred.
Registration, Certification Or Licensure:
- Valid driver’s license is required. *The ability to obtain a Texas Driver’s License will be required within first 30 days of employment. A satisfactory driving record is required for driving state or federal vehicles to conduct agency business.
Other Requirements:
- Background Investigation. Selected candidate must pass federal security background investigation. The process includes a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and fingerprinting. New employees must complete and sign the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Form SF85. Completed forms are submitted to the OPM for the background investigations.
- Eligibility to Work in the U.S. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires all new employees to present proof of eligibility to work in the United States within three (3) days of being hired. The Texas Military Department participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization. All offers of employment are contingent upon the candidate having and maintaining legal authorization to work in the United States. Failure to present such authorization within the time specified by the U.S. Department of Labor will result in the offer being rescinded.
- Sponsorship. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Knowledge Of:
- principles of electricity Alternating Current and Direct Current (AC/DC), solid state circuitry, and safety rules and regulations pertaining to powered support systems
- the operation of emergency generator power systems
- regulations, procedures, and policies related to records maintenance and documentation.
Skill In:
- reading, interpreting, and using wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, technical orders, technical publications, and similar guides
- using hand and power tools, instruments, test equipment, and electrical meters to include special tools such as hydraulic knock-out tools, hammers, drills and valve spring compressors
- installing, operating, inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and modifying generators, automatic transfer switches, and uninterruptible power systems
Ability To:
- apply shop procedures, policies, written and present oral instructions and directives sufficient to provide training to others
- troubleshooting complex situations related to electrical power generators
- work in a military environment.
Physical/Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment. Exposure to seasonal and inclement weather can be expected for a percentage of the time spent going to regular site visits, which may incur moderate risks, discomforts, and unpleasantness such as high noise levels, infectious materials, or toxic or irritating chemicals; dust; aircraft exhaust; noxious fumes; flammable liquids; etc. Work may be performed during both daytime and nighttime hours outside of the normal duty day, in unlighted or dimly lighted areas as required by various base maintenance and aircraft and general support operations. Special safety precautions such as protective clothing and gear are necessary. However, when office work is required, the environment will be adequately lit and, in a climate, controlled environment.
