Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or Pharmacology or closely related field in hand by October 1, 2025. Full time experience conducting bench research using basic science lab skills such as cancer cell culture, cell viability assay, microsome preparation, lipid extraction, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), thin liquid chromatography (TLC), enzymatic activity assay, enzyme kinetics, tumor cell implantation, substance administration to and blood sampling from small laboratory animals.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Lab skills including protein-ligand docking, high throughput screening, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator Dr. Cungui Mao associated with the Cancer Center and Department of Medicine. The Mao lab identified the alkaline ceramidase (ACER) family consisting of three members, ACER1, ACER2, and ACER3 in humans. Recent studies from the lab suggest that these ACER enzymes play important roles in regulating bioactive sphingolipids (ceramide, sphingosine, and sphingosine-1-phosphate) as well as biological responses that impact cancer development, progression, and therapy. The incumbent will conduct research by participating in experiments that develop and test small molecule inhibitors of the ACER family as potential cancer therapeutics and will be required to ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University.
Duties:
● Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct research experiments in the field of Biochemistry and/or Pharmacology.
● Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related field to analyze the collected data.
● Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.
● Lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies as needed.
● Other duties as assigned, which may include attending Scientific Conferences and Meetings.
