The Windows Fundamentals Platform Health team is looking for a talented Software Engineer II who can help us make Windows more efficient, leaner, and more responsive. Our team is responsible for building an efficient and reliable scoring and gating system for performance and power scenarios. Our service produces data used by the entire Windows organization to make critical code-flow decisions and empowers internal teams to detect, debug, and fix performance and power regressions. We are in the unique position of being able to work on the latest Windows code, test on the newer devices and write Azure services daily. We want to hire a talented engineer with a passion for quality that can help us expand our coverage, scale our service and improve customer satisfaction.

The Windows Fundamentals Team works on the full stack across hardware partners, OS, Shell, applications, and ecosystem to protect, improve and manage battery life, performance and reliability every release across Windows and Devices. We apply diverse skills—from collaborating with partner teams to leveraging trace analysis, telemetry pipelines, and AI-driven data insights. Our work is data-driven with a sharp focus towards achieving excellence.

The set of tools/technologies we use to achieve our objectives include C, C++, C#, scripting, Web development code, SQL and Kusto database languages, trace processing applications in Azure, machine learning models, Power BI, statistics, Windows Performance Analyzer, ETW tracing, low-level silicon and OS tools and power instrumented hardware.

Responsibilities

  • You will be responsible for developing and implementing new performance scenarios for Windows.
  • You will learn to review work items to gain knowledge of product features in partnership with appropriate stakeholders and assist and learn about breaking down work items into tasks and provides estimation as well as escalate any issues that would cause a delay.
  • You will work with other performance leaders to evaluate and analyze performance data and fine-tune our performance metrics.
  • You will also be able to work on the back-end services that collect and analyze and score the performance metrics for performance and power.
  • You will have the opportunity to design Azure services and tools that consume, score and present performance metrics for all our internal customers.
  • You will also help drive cross-team engagement, which will result in impactful performance improvements for external customers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, or JavaScript. 
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years experience with software performance tools and analysis.
  • OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements:Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Analysis capabilities towards optimizing systems.
  • Knowledge of power or performance areas.
  • 1+ years experience with Azure, Cloud Services, SQL databases and Distributed Systems.
  • Experience with Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA) and Windows Performance Recorder (WPR)

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
