Commerce + Ecosystems (C+E) is responsible for enabling and optimizing the end-to-end customer journey on the Microsoft Cloud. 

C+E’s Commerce Financial Platforms (CFP) team is responsible for Financial Platforms, Global Payments Platform, Employee Financial Experiences, and C+E Compliance, and also develops and operates financial commerce platforms and tools that perform all revenue management functions for our customers, partners, and staff worldwide.

We are the engineering team within the Global Payments Platform (GPP) organization, a core platform in the Commerce & Ecosystem group at Microsoft. Our mission is to build and operate the backbone of Microsoft’s commerce capabilities, delivering seamless payment experiences, enforcing security and compliance, and ensuring high reliability and performance across global transactions. Our services support major Microsoft business units including Xbox, Office 365, Azure, Entra, Microsoft Store, and Edge, and are deployed in over 200 countries.  

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design and develop cloud-native microservices, implement secure and compliant systems for managing customer payment methods, and solve challenges related to performance, availability, and scalability. You will collaborate across product, infrastructure, and security teams to deliver robust solutions, and contribute to intelligent fraud prevention and agentic product capabilities. This role requires technical depth, ownership mindset, and a drive to continuously modernize the payment stack using data-driven engineering and cloud technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with appropriate stakeholders to gather and refine business requirements aligned with engineering excellence principles and vision.
  • Lead architectural design discussions and validate proposals through data-driven analysis and stakeholder alignment.
  • Drive identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
  • Establish and uphold coding standards focused on extensibility, maintainability, and performance. 
  • Proactively and reactively debug, refactor, and enhance infrastructure to improve system performance and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain operational integrity of live services through on-call rotations and incident response ownership.
  • Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.
  • Design and implement internal tools to streamline engineering workflows and evaluate emerging technologies for applicability.  
  • Leverage AI in day-to-day engineering tasks, including automation, troubleshooting, create anomaly detection pipeline, and performance tuning.
  • Share technical experience and mentor peers and service owners on engineering best practices, tools, and strategies.
  • Influence long-term technology direction by contributing to the team’s technical roadmap and driving adoption of modern engineering practices.  
  • Serve as a role model for other developers, promoting the engineering culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python
  • OR equivalent experience. 
  • 4+ years of experience in software design and development, with a proven track record of delivering large-scale, high-performance, and scalable systems that also includes experience in application/service development and full-stack development.

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in dealing with ambiguous problems, driving clarity, and delivering scalable technical solutions. 
  • Experience with Azure PaaS and IaaS services. 
  • Exposure to front-end frameworks/languages like ReactJS, TypeScript, etc. 
  • Experience working with large data sets in SQL/Cosmos DB/Data Lake or similar. 
  • Experience working with AI based solutions.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
