Alaska Northstar Federal is currently seeking a Linux Engineer to join the team on a long-term project to be awarded soon. The Linux Engineer will provide expert-level administration, engineering, and operational support for Linux-based systems hosted on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in support of government programs. This position is responsible for configuring, optimizing, securing, and automating Linux environments to meet stringent federal and DoD requirements for reliability, security, and performance. The engineer will operate in a collaborative, compliance-driven environment, applying lessons learned and best practices documented in recent contract performance and CPARS evaluations.
The Linux Engineer's responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Deploy, configure, patch, and maintain Linux servers (primarily Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Linux) in OCI environments to support mission-critical applications.
- Design and implement cloud-native Linux solutions using OCI services (Compute, Storage, Networking, IAM, etc.) to enable resilient, scalable, and secure architectures.
- Develop, update, and manage Infrastructure as Code (IaC) scripts and automation frameworks (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, Bash, Python) to enable repeatable, efficient operations and compliance.
- Configure and maintain system monitoring, alerting, and observability tools, leveraging OCI Monitoring, Oracle Cloud Guard, and third-party solutions to ensure system health and quickly detect anomalies.
- Respond to and resolve system incidents, performing troubleshooting and root cause analysis; implement corrective actions to minimize system downtime and meet contracted SLAs.
- Apply DoD RMF, NIST, and FedRAMP security controls to Linux systems; manage system hardening, vulnerability remediation, patch management, access controls, and audit logging.
- Support Authority to Operate (ATO) sustainment by producing and maintaining technical documentation, procedures, and compliance artifacts.
- Collaborate with application, database, cybersecurity, and network engineers to deliver secure, integrated technology solutions to government customers.
- Provide Tier II/III operational support, technical consultation, and mentoring to colleagues and mission partners as required.
- Proactively identify opportunities for modernization, automation, and process improvement to enhance service quality, system reliability, and compliance posture.
- Maintain up-to-date system documentation, runbooks, technical guides, and knowledgebase articles for continuity of operations and audit readiness.
- Participate in after-hours on-call rotations to support mission-critical Linux systems as needed by contract requirements.
- Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen
- Candidate must have an active DoD Secret Clearance
- Candidate must have an active Security+ CE (or equivalent)
- Candidate must have at least 4 years of experience in the following:
- Linux system administration with at least 2 years supporting cloud-based Linux environments, preferably on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
- Linux system internals, command-line tools, core services (systemd, SELinux, firewalls), and cloud provisioning.
- Scripting and automation (Bash, Python, Ansible, Terraform).
- Applying and maintaining security standards aligned with DoD, NIST, and FedRAMP requirements and supporting ATO, STIG, and vulnerability remediation processes.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills; effective communicator with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Bachelor's degree
- Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Architect Associate/Professional or Oracle Linux certification; Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or RHCE.
- Experience supporting ITIL, ITSM, or Agile/Scrum delivery frameworks.
- Familiarity with container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes), Windows server administration, and enterprise hybrid cloud operations.
- Experience supporting federal government programs with high reliability and compliance demands.
