Description
Position Summary:
The Corporate Controller - TIG works directly with accounting, key business partners, and departments across the company to manage, allocate and monitor financial resources in compliance with laws, regulations and policies, with sufficient transparency and appropriate internal controls. Accountable for all of the accounting operations of the company. This individual has extensive knowledge of GAAP and Statutory Insurance accounting, monthly close, financial report preparation and daily accounting tasks and reconciliations as well as communication with various levels of customers and management.
Key Responsibilities And Essential Functions:
- Manages all accounting operations according to GAAP and STAT standards
- Responsible for audited GAAP financials for multiple business unit combinations using appropriate close procedures, accounting journal entries, intercompany transactions and reconciliation of general ledger accounts on a timely and accurate basis
- Manages and responsible for review of statutory statement filings for the insurance companies, all regulatory reporting for accurate and timely statutory filings
- Responsible for researching and understanding new statutory accounting guidance and the implementation and design of emerging reporting standards
- Responsible for ensuring appropriate loss reserves are reported quarterly, and at year end.
- Oversees year-end funding process by working closely with key finance, underwriting and actuarial partners
- Responsible for the year end annual audit process; works closely with auditors and state regulators to complete exams - Responsible for ledger and financial setup for new entity acquisitions including purchase accounting and valuation
- Liaises with internal and external auditors and regulators
- Responsible for the design, documentation and implementation of processes and controls including key metrics for Model Audit Rule (MAR)
- Responsible for the completion of month-end financials using appropriate close procedures, accounting journal entries, intercompany transactions and reconciliations of general ledger accounts on a timely and accurate basis
- Certifies the control process ensuring significant balance sheet and income statement accounts are reconciled and thoroughly reviewed for trial balance to be complete, accurate and compliant
- Assist in identifying manual processes for automation to improve efficiency, including automation using available technologies.
- Analyzes and reviews board and management reporting as needed for MAR compliance certification
- Responsible for managing, leading and holding the accounting team accountable. Maintains responsibility for employee development and oversight including but not limited to; hiring, development, discipline of employees.
- Leads the team in execution of department goals and initiatives.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies
- Designs and maintains controls for accounting related ERM tasks
- Performs other activities, duties and assignments as needed or requested
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field or equivalent experience, with 10+ years of Insurance accounting experience.
- MBA or CPA with public accounting background preferred
- 10+ years’ experience including senior leadership experience in financial services and/or insurance industry
- Experience leading teams, including managing service providers (external auditors, tax specialists and consultants)
- Experience optimizing processes, managing change initiatives and executing key strategic projects
- Experience in troubleshooting and resolving reconciliation, ledger and reporting issues
- MAR controls experience
- Strong technical accounting skills including the ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections
- Insurance industry knowledge and a working knowledge of insurance systems (policy & claim) preferred
- Strong leader: establishes trust and accountability to lead team of 15+ employees
- Ability to multi-task and learn quickly
- Ability to self-start and research independently
- Ability to handle and resolve conflicts in a professional, tactful manner
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong sense of accountability, comfortable making recommendations and taking accountability for outcomes
- Extensive knowledge of best internal control practices, GAAP and STAT policies required
- Working knowledge of transactional systems such as Microsoft GP, Prospero, Wings and W-Desk preferred
- Ability to define problems, collect and analyze data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and recommend solutions
- Advanced skills in Excel, Pivot Tables, Power Pivot, Power Query, reading and writing MACROS)

Working Conditions
This position is located in a professional office environment. Remote working will be a consideration. This role routinely uses standard office equipment and requires the physical demands of a normal office position with some light lifting. This is a full-time position with benefits. This position may require longer hours and weekend work when necessary. Some travel may be required.
