What's interesting about this job? The Controller oversees the organization’s accounting operations, including financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, and audit preparation. The Controller ensures timely and accurate recording of financial transactions; guides staff in adherence to GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards and supports the CFO in driving financial excellence and operational efficiency across the organization.

Position Details: Location: Hybrid – preferred location being within Raleigh or the Charlotte area. Position may be located within the PPSAT service area of NC, SC, or VA Schedule: Full-Time, Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (40 hours/week) Travel: Up to 10% within PPSAT's service area based on operational needs
What You’ll Do: The Controller performs a wide range of duties including, but not limited to the following: Financial Management and Reporting: · Oversee all general ledger, month-end, and year-end close processes. · Ensure the timely preparation and distribution of accurate financial statements (monthly, quarterly, and annual). · Manage the preparation of financial reports for the Board, Leadership Team, and funders. · Oversee grant reporting, restricted funds tracking, and compliance with funder requirements.
Accounting Operations: · Supervise the Accounting team, including the Accounting Manager, Accounts Payable, and Staff/Senior Accountants. · Monitor day-to-day accounting functions, including cash management, reconciliations, and journal entries. · Leads annual audit preparation and implements corrective actions. · Ensure compliance with GAAP, and other nonprofit regulatory requirements. · Oversee fixed assets management, accruals, and reconciliations for all balance sheet accounts.
Internal Controls and Compliance: · Maintain strong internal control systems and ensure adherence to policies and procedures. · Collaborate with auditors, providing schedules and documentation for annual financial and retirement plan audits. · Partner with department heads to improve financial understanding and strengthen cost-control practices. · Ensure compliance with state, federal, and grant regulations.
Team Leadership & Collaboration: · Lead, coach, and mentor the accounting team to ensure professional development and high performance. · Foster collaboration with cross-functional teams (e.g., Development, HR, Operations) to ensure accurate reporting of expenses and grant usage. · Act as a resource for department managers on financial policies and reporting processes. Process Improvement & Systems: · Drive efficiency by enhancing accounting workflows and leveraging technology for automation and reporting. · Support the CFO in evaluating and implementing new systems, such as future GL or reporting software. · Develop and maintain written standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all accounting functions. General: · Contribute to a positive work environment by following through on tasks, taking initiative, working with the team, and identifying solutions. · Adhere to affiliate policies and procedures including meetings and training requirements, ensuring punctuality and attendance, and following personnel policies.

What You'Ll Bring To The Role:
- B.A. in accounting or related field with 4-6 years in a financial management position or 8 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree.
- 1 year of prior supervisory experience.
- Experience managing or working within a healthcare environment, especially non- profit experience.
- Worked as a Finance Director, Accounting Manager or Senior Accountant performing month end close duties for a minimum of three years.
- Extensive experience with accounting software programs and Excel. MIP Fund Accounting Software preferred.
