The Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH) Senior Associate/Engineer provides compliance oversight and services at Evonik Tippecanoe Laboratories and other Evonik sites to ensure safe chemical production processes. The role supports environmental, safety, and health programs, implements corporate and regulatory standards, develops safety concepts for new and existing processes, and mentors less experienced engineers in fundamental ESH practices. This position also coordinates sustainability, regulatory compliance, and corporate ESH initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Manage Industrial Hygiene (IH) programs, including chemical hazard identification, exposure monitoring, PPE assignment, and training.
- Oversee radiation safety, including monitoring, NRC compliance, and equipment logs.
- Lead hearing conservation efforts: assess noise hazards, maintaining employee/area lists, noise maps, signage, and training.
- Manage High Potent API (HPAPI) handling programs and risk assessments; provide guidance to engineering and operations.
- Ensure occupational health compliance: medical surveillance, wellness initiatives, and treatment protocols for chemical exposure.
- Provide general ESH program support, including audits, inspections, compliance tools, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Participate in Responsible Care / ISO 14001 management system implementation and annual reviews.
- Ensure compliance with cGMP and SISPQ requirements through documentation, training, and housekeeping practices.
- Promote ESH culture by coaching, reporting hazards, and adhering to all ESHS policies and procedures.
- Support strategic site initiatives, integrating best practices and methodologies into process design and operations.
Requirements
- BS/MS in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related field with 10+ years of ESH experience in pharmaceutical or chemical industries.
- Relevant certifications preferred (CIH, CSP, PE).
- Strong knowledge of Industrial Hygiene, occupational safety, radiation safety, HPAPI handling, and regulatory compliance.
- Proven ability to make authoritative recommendations and implement sustainable compliance solutions.
- Strong technical, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities; able to work across all organizational levels.
- Experience in audits, inspections, and reporting to regulatory agencies.
- Ability to mentor and develop less experienced staff.
- Must support continuous operations, including being on-call if needed.
- Passion for environmental, safety, and health initiatives.
