Description

The Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering invites applications for tenured or tenure-track faculty positions at all ranks (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Full Professor) in the area of data science and artificial intelligence for materials design and innovation.

We seek candidates whose research focuses on the development of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science methods to synthesize, process, characterize, and design new materials, including biomaterials. Of particular interest are research directions, both foundational and applied, in AI-driven autonomous synthesis, processing, and characterization, leveraging our state-of-the-art facilities.

Candidates will be part of the new Data Science and AI Institute and will be encouraged to collaborate with other existing university-wide initiatives. We expect the candidate to leverage the Materials Characterization and Processing facility and the Artificial Intelligence for Materials Design Laboratory. Johns Hopkins University has committed to a transformative investment in its Data Science and AI Institute, including the addition of 80 new tenure-track faculty positions, 30 Bloomberg Distinguished Professorships, and the construction of a 500,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility on the Homewood campus.

The expected salary ranges are as follows: Assistant Professors, $150k-$200k, Associate Professors, $180k-$245k, Full Professors, $200k-$450k, for a 12-month FTE position. The referenced salary range is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will be based on factors including, but not limited to, the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate - e.g., years in rank, training, field, discipline, other work experience, and other similar factors; geographic location; internal equity; external market conditions; and other factors as reasonably determined by the University.

Qualifications

Applicants must hold an earned doctorate in an appropriate field by the time their appointment begins. Candidates must have demonstrated an ability to conduct outstanding independent research and show promise for excellent teaching, mentoring, and entrepreneurship in all areas.

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting.  Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range.  The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
