Principal Engineer - Cloud Scaling

Role Summary

We are seeking a Principal Engineer - Cloud Scaling to drive the highest level of engineering excellence and lead our cloud scaling initiatives within our flagship product, World-Check One. This is a unique opportunity to remain hands-on while shaping the technical direction of a platform that must scale to meet aggressive business growth, support the rapid delivery of new product features, and address the high demands of our customers.

This is an individual contributor role, reporting directly to the Engineering Director. You will not have direct people management responsibilities, but will provide technical leadership, mentorship, and influence across teams.

You will be responsible for setting and upholding the highest standards of engineering, ensuring our systems are designed for performance, availability, and scalability. You will diagnose and resolve complex architectural and code-level performance issues, and work closely with Directors, Architects, Developers, and Product Managers to deliver robust, high-quality solutions.

Our primary goal in World-Check One over the next two years is to transform our architecture into a truly Cloud-Native platform, while maintaining aggressive growth and enabling the delivery of new product features that are critical to the future success of the platform. As Principal Engineer, you will balance staying at the forefront of new technologies with a pragmatic approach to solving real-world problems, ensuring our platform can scale efficiently and reliably.

What You'll Be Doing

• Drive the technical vision and hands-on leadership for World-Check One cloud-scaling initiatives, ensuring the platform can transform and scale to support aggressive growth and new product features.
• Set and uphold the highest standards for service, quality, security, and performance, proactively addressing technical debt and prioritising improvements alongside feature delivery.
• Lead innovations to handle rapidly growing volumes, reducing cost and time to market, while enabling the introduction of new capabilities.
• Champion engineering excellence and differentiation to address current and future business needs.
• Lead service improvements for performance, availability, security, privacy, and data residency.
• Guide teams to deliver quality products on time, following Agile software development practices, through technical influence rather than direct management.
• Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and data-driven decision making.
• Collaborate across business areas to solve shared challenges and maximise the impact of engineering efforts.

You Have:

• Degree level qualification, preferably in Computer Science or related field or equivalent.
• Proven experience as a principal or lead engineer driving large scale global systems and teams.
• Deep expertise with cloud technologies (predominantly AWS; Azure and GCP experience beneficial).
• Strong background in the Java development stack.
• Demonstrated success building high performance, scalable, and reliable solutions.
• Experience working with and coaching geographically dispersed teams and working in multi-location, multi-time zone environments.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence at all organisational levels.
• Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment managing multiple projects with tight deadlines.
• Experience with ML/AI technologies is a plus.
