C.H Robinson is seeking a Senior Director Data Science who will lead the strategic direction and advanced capabilities in the domain of algorithm design and development to cross-functionally support all product initiatives in our 50+ member data science team. You will help us in executing our 18 million organizational shipments a year by connecting a diverse carrier and customer marketplace through our industry-leading technology and freight matching ecosystem. You will provide technical and scientific thought leadership on modeling/ algorithm-based solutions for our toughest and most complex supply chain problems. The Senior Director of Data Science will be an industry-renowned expert that will work with executive leaders across the enterprise to take these strategies to production. We value rapid prototyping and speed to impact as core tenants of our R&D based culture.
The Senior Director of Data Science will help solve tough data science problems and oversee the delivery, implementation, and strategy of impactful solutions. You will also have a strong mathematical/programming background that can help data scientists understand the impact of their work and navigate the algorithm development lifecycle. You will also be responsible for developing strategic partnerships with senior executives/leaders, influencing business strategy, product needs for delivering to market, pushing organizational boundaries to achieve impact, and leading and managing teams.
Duties And Responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of this position consists of, but are not limited to, the following:
- Drive a philosophy/culture of continual improvement.
- Develop the strategy of how to determine what projects should go through R&D in partnership with other senior leaders.
- Communicate complex data science concepts and findings to non-technical stakeholders in a clear and concise manner, influencing decision-making at all levels of the organization.
- Develop strategic relationships with Senior leaders in the business and service lines to understand multiyear goals and initiatives to help influence and bring data strategies to life
- Provide guidance and mentorship to the data science leadership team, fostering their professional growth and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
- Be the voice of expertise in algorithm design/architecture and data science knowledge and know-how
- Evaluate and understand current & nascent modeling methods in the Data Science space
- Establish and ensure adoption of an R&D mindset on the team
- Serve as an escalation point for critical business issues and specialized requests
- Serve as an escalation point for senior leaders and executive team
- Work with enterprise architects, product architects, value owners, project managers, delivery leads, data scientists, engineers, and support team members to bring big data R&D projects into production
- Part of Analytics, TL Pricing and Data Science leadership team
- Understand the current market to determine how it impacts projects
- Stays informed of changes within the customers' business, industry, and sector, stays current on industry/market best practices, and shares knowledge with team; applies that knowledge to data strategies
- Responsible for annual workforce planning process, including forecasting resource needs, and partners with Talent Acquisition to establish a pipeline, recruit, select, and onboard qualified and diverse talent
- Manages annual merit and equity programs for Data Science function to align compensation with performance results
- Builds a deep understanding of the skills and abilities of Data Science leadership team
- Aligns team’s passion with their potential and commits to consistently providing feedback, development opportunities and recognition
- Encourages employee feedback through formal and informal channels. Acknowledges and takes action on feedback to drive a trusting culture of open two-way communication, inclusivity and continuous improvement
- Other duties or responsibilities as assigned according to the team and/or country specific requirements
Required Qualifications:
- Masters or graduate degree in a quantitative discipline or bachelor's degree in a quantitative discipline and 2 years of equivalent work experience
- Minimum 10+ years of experience in the field of data science
- Minimum 4 years of leading and managing teams
- Experience in programming & modeling: R and Python
- Experience with Advanced Algorithm & Optimization Techniques
- Proficiency with Linux Operating Systems & Containerization
- Recognized expert in your field of study
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in a quantitative discipline
- Experience with Spark/Hive/Hadoop Ecosystems
- Experience with relational databases and fundamentals
- Experience with application development frameworks in the python/R ecosystem (Flask, Django, Shiny)
- Proven ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and out-of-the-box thinking

Compensation Range
$193,800.00 - $332,500.00The base pay range displayed on the job posting reflects the minimum and maximum base pay for this specific location. Your individual base pay within this range is determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
