About The Opportunity

The Gadigal Centre is the University of Sydney's dedicated space for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. It provides access to academic, pastoral, financial and cultural support services as well as academic and social enrichment programs.

The Gadigal Centre is now hiring for a Deputy Director, Gadigal Centre (Identified) to join their high performing team. In this role, you will support the Director, Gadigal Centre (Identified) by overseeing daily operations and administrative processes of the Gadigal Centre, ensuring the implementation of the University’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander strategy (One Sydney, Many People) across all Gadigal Centre activities, and acting as the Director as required.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead the development, planning and delivery of strategic projects, services and day-to-day operations across the Gadigal Centre, ensuring alignment with broader university priorities.
  • Manage the Gadigal Centre’s budgeting, financial reporting and resource planning in collaboration with the Director, to support strategic financial objectives.
  • Support the Director to build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships and lead communications with relevant entities across the University, ensuring the Gadigal Centre’s work is visible, valued and well-connected.
  • Support the ongoing implementation of the University’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy and other relevant strategies through the Gadigal Centre’s operations, programs and deliverables.
  • Ensure the team consistently demonstrate cultural competence and a deep understanding of the histories, values and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Promote inclusive practice and continuous learning by building and supporting culturally responsive teams.

About You

  • Lived experience as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, grounded in strong cultural knowledge, community engagement, and a deep respect for the diverse identities, histories, and lived realities of First Nations peoples in today’s Australia
  • A collaborative and proactive approach with demonstrated leadership experience that shows you’re confident working independently and, in a team, and that you use sound judgement to navigate day-to-day challenges and support others to do the same.
  • A solid grasp of policy, governance and budget processes in a university or public sector setting, including how administrative decisions are made, implemented and reported on. You understand accountability frameworks and can work within them effectively.
  • Experience in strategic planning and stakeholder engagement, with the ability to build trusted relationships and advocate for culturally responsive approaches across teams and programs.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to work respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on matters related to delivering high-quality higher education.
  • Experience in building and supporting culturally responsive teams, with a commitment to inclusive practice, mentoring, and continuous learning.
  • A working understanding of Work Health and Safety policies and legislation, and how they apply in practice.
