The AENB Controllership team within American Express is responsible for overseeing and managing the accounting activities primarily for American Express National Bank (“AENB”) – a legal entity which comprises a significant portion of the American Express business. Broadly, the Controllership team ensures the integrity of the Bank’s financial results in accordance with U.S. GAAP, provides an effective control environment over financial reporting, works to eliminate controllable financial risk, and supports growth in the business while balancing control and compliance.
We work extensively with other Finance colleagues and subject matter experts, AENB teams and leaders, business partners, General Counsel’s Office, and various regulatory agencies (i.e. FRB and OCC), among others. This position is part of the AENB Controllership team and plays a key role in helping the team meet its objectives. The accounting manager takes primary ownership and responsibility for the financial accounting function, including:
- Coordinating and managing the general accounting function, including accuracy of the ledger accounts and resultant financial statements
- Directing the financial accounting close
- Leading a team of two accounting professionals supporting accounting functions and research and clearance reconciliation processes for AENB products and accounts
- Supporting the annual financial statement and disclosure preparation process
- Supervising the completion of journal entries and other monthly closing activities
- Evaluating controls and identifying and implementing process improvements, ensuring compliance with SOX 404 and FDICIA internal control requirements
- Providing accounting support on special projects related to key business and financial initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
- Minimum of 3+ years of relevant work experience, including financial reporting, accounting, and/or audit, with an understanding of US GAAP and bank regulations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Thorough understanding of close processes, journal entries and accruals, and settlement processes
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, drive projects, improve processes, and work well under deadlines
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
- Advanced excel skills with the ability to manipulate and present financial information clearly and concisely
- Dedicated, reliable, self-motivated individual with strong organizational skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Ability to create good working relationships with business partners
- Ability to lead a team and ensure that daily, weekly and month-end responsibilities are completed timely
- Flexible and adaptable in a continuously changing environment, demonstrating the ability to meet deadlines and provide a quality product to customers
Minimum Qualifications
Salary Range: $89,250.00 to $150,250.00 annually + bonus + benefits
