Position Description

 

Occupational Safety Specialist Iv:

Assists in implementing and monitoring the Department's safety program to reduce or eliminate occupational incidents, injuries, illnesses, deaths and financial losses. Employees at this level establish their own work plans and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are handled at the occurrence and relayed to the supervisor and discussed in advance depending on the nature.

Occupational Safety Specialist V:

Assists in developing, implementing, and monitoring the Department's safety program to reduce or eliminate occupational incidents, injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses. Employees at this level establish their own work plans and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are handled at the occurrence and relayed to the supervisor and discussed in advance depending on the nature.

Essential Duties:

Occupational Safety Specialist Iv:

  • Advises, coordinates, and trains Department personnel in occupational safety and hazardous materials matters; conducts safety needs surveys; reports findings and evaluates follow-up actions, which focuses in field operations.
  • Assists in planning, scheduling, and monitoring programs or activities that promote employee safety and incident prevention.
  • Assists in the development and/or review of specifications for the purchase of employee safety and hazardous materials items.
  • Determines and analyzes reported incident frequency rates.
  • Develops policies, procedures, guidelines, and rule interpretations to comply with federal, state, and local rules and regulations.
  • Identifies injury types, incident causes, and inspects work areas/activities to identify hazards; recommends preventive actions and conducts follow-up investigations.
  • Performs industrial hygiene testing of departmental operations to ensure compliance with safety and hazardous materials regulations and to minimize employee health risks/exposures.
  • Prepares safety and hazardous materials information for publication.
  • Represents the Department in a professional manner on occupational safety matters.
  • Prepares and presents information on various programs, projects, and activities to executives, departmental staff, and/or at professional meetings, seminars, and conferences.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

    Occupational Safety Specialist V:

  • May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks. 
  • Represents the Department with a high level of professionalism regarding occupational safety matters.
  • Coordinates safety meetings; which usually involves planning topics for discussion, conducting, and coordinating schedules.
  • Analyzes policies and operations, develops strategies to make improvements, and facilitates collaboration among different groups to resolve issues.
 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Admin, or related discipline. 
  • Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • 5 years occupational safety, industrial hygiene or related work areas.
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.
  • Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses And Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Safety Impact Certificate

Occupational Safety Specialist V:

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Admin, or related discipline. 
  • Relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • 5 years occupational safety, industrial hygiene or related work areas.
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.
  • Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses And Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Safety Impact Certificate
  • Must have completed OSHA 500 Trainer Course in Construction and OSHA 501 Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry.
  • Must have one of the following professional safety designations : (1) Advanced Safety Certificate (ASC); (2 ) General Industry/Construction Industry Outreach Instructor or Certified Safety and Health Official (CSHO); (3) Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or (4) equivalent training or certification as determined by the Occupational Safety Division (OCC).

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs

  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
