Job Description

  • Location: Geraldton Port
  • Roster: 7 Days 7 Off, 7 Nights, 7 Off - Home after every shift!
  • Shift Hours: 12 Hours
  • Type: Full-time Permanent 
  • Remuneration on Offer: $130,000 + Super + 10% Performance Bonus

The Deputy Port Operations Supervisor supports the daily management of operations at Geraldton Port and Newhaul’s satellite site, Ruvidini. Acting as the 2IC to the Port Operations Supervisor, this role provides operational leadership, safety oversight, and logistical coordination to ensure efficient and compliant port and haulage activities.

The position is primarily based at Geraldton Port, with regular visits to Ruvidini to conduct inspections, audits, and supervisory duties. The Deputy is expected to provide hands-on operational support, ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards, and act in the Supervisor’s stead when required.

Key Responsibilities

Safety, Compliance & Environmental Management

  • Support the Operations Supervisor in maintaining a safety-first culture across Geraldton and Ruvidini.
  • Conduct safety inspections, risk assessments, and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Champion compliance with Safe Work Instructions (SWIs), JSEAs, and Take 5s.
  • Ensure compliance with transport, port, and haulage safety regulations.
  • Monitor loader operator and contractor compliance, conducting audits as needed.
  • Undertake alcohol and drug screening for drivers, operators, and visitors.
  • Assist with safety investigations, reporting, and follow-up actions.
  • Conduct emergency drills and maintain readiness across both sites.
  • Oversee environmental controls such as dust suppression, water runoff, and waste management.
  • Maintain accurate safety documentation and contribute to continuous improvement of safety systems.

Operational Oversight

  • Support day-to-day operations at Geraldton Port, including coordination of in-loading, unloading, and storage.
  • Conduct site supervision and inspections at Ruvidini to ensure compliance and operational readiness.
  • Supervise stockpile management, including moisture monitoring and reconciliation reporting.
  • Assist with pre-start meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Ensure pre-starts are completed on machinery and fixed plant.
  • Ensure security, access control, and asset protection at both sites.
  • Issue and manage work permits for high-risk activities (hot work, confined space, working at heights).
  • Identify and implement operational improvements and automation opportunities.

Facility & Asset Maintenance

  • Assist with maintenance planning and execution for equipment and infrastructure at Geraldton and Ruvidini.
  • Coordinate with maintenance team for preventative and reactive maintenance.
  • Ensure fire mitigation measures, signage upkeep, and general housekeeping are maintained.

People Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as the on-ground leader in the absence of the Port Operations Supervisor.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and support to team members and contractors.
  • Conduct toolbox meetings, pre-starts, and safety briefings.
  • Assist with inductions and training for new employees.
  • Engage with external stakeholders such as the Shire and nearby landholders.
  • Promote strong communication and coordination between the Port and Ruvidini and Road teams.
  • Contribute to workforce planning, fatigue management, and disciplinary processes where required.

Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain operational records, inspection logs, and compliance documentation.
  • Contribute to KPI and performance reporting (throughput, safety, maintenance).
  • Monitor truck movements, productivity data, and near-miss reports.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to safety, operational efficiency, and maintenance systems.
  • Support P&L commentary.
