About The Role
xAI is building Colossus I & II, the world’s largest AI supercomputers. As a Power Generation Manager, you will lead our power generation organization, ensuring the seamless and scalable delivery of high-reliability power to fuel this revolutionary AI infrastructure. You will oversee a team of engineers and technicians responsible for natural gas power plants, driving operational excellence, strategic planning, and innovation at the nexus of energy systems and advanced AI computing. This leadership role demands a blend of technical acumen, team-building prowess, and forward-thinking strategy to support xAI's ambitious goals. Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team of power generation engineers and technicians, providing mentorship, performance guidance, and professional development to build a high-performing organization.
- Develop and execute long-term strategies for power generation capacity expansion, efficiency optimization, and integration with datacenter demands, in collaboration with xAI leadership.
- Oversee budgeting, resource allocation, and vendor management for power plant operations, ensuring cost-effective and reliable energy supply while minimizing environmental impact.
- Drive risk assessment, contingency planning, and compliance with all regulatory standards (local, state, federal) for natural gas turbine operations and power distribution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, including datacenter operations, electrical engineering, and executive teams, to align power infrastructure with evolving AI computational needs.
- Champion continuous improvement initiatives, including root cause analysis of incidents, technology upgrades, and adoption of sustainable practices like renewable integration.
- Monitor key performance metrics for power systems, using data-driven insights to proactively address issues and enhance system reliability and uptime.
- Represent xAI in external partnerships and regulatory interactions, advocating for innovative energy solutions that support our mission.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in power generation, with at least 5 years in a leadership or managerial role overseeing natural gas plants, turbines, or high-reliability energy systems.
- Proven expertise in managing teams in industrial energy environments, with strong skills in strategic planning, budgeting, and stakeholder communication.
- Deep knowledge of turbine operations, control systems, power distribution, and compliance with industry standards (e.g., ASME, IEEE, EPA regulations).
- Demonstrated success in troubleshooting and resolving complex power generation challenges in mission-critical settings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or MBA in a relevant engineering or business discipline.
- 15+ years of experience, including senior leadership in power plant operations, datacenter energy management, or utility-scale projects.
- Experience with major turbine manufacturers (e.g., GE, Siemens) and combined cycle or hybrid power systems.
- Familiarity with AI/datacenter power demands and emerging technologies like energy storage or grid modernization.
- Professional certifications such as PE (Professional Engineer), CEM (Certified Energy Manager), or PMP (Project Management Professional).
- Prior experience in high-tech, aerospace, or large-scale infrastructure projects, with a track record of scaling operations in fast-paced environments.
