Job Description

The Metrology Team supports processes for laboratories at Viracor with a focus on maintaining CLIA, CAP and NYDOH, GxP accreditation by using and maintaining procedures and software or other methods to perform, train, document, assist others to ensure complete and appropriate documentation of required tasks and records.

The Metrology Supervisor’s role is to keep the lab cleaning and maintenance program current with manufacturer and regulatory requirements. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the metrology team cleaning and/or preventative maintenance events while maintaining equipment records.

Laboratory Metrology Supervisor responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversee daily operations in the laboratory and provide overall direction and assistance to associates
  • Administer work schedules and review/approve associate time sheets
  • Work with manager to ensure appropriate staffing of area of responsibility
  • Interview and select candidates for open positions when needed
  • Assess team members by conducting effective performance reviews, and coach associates through necessary performance improvements as needed
  • Work with laboratory operations directors, managers, and supervisors to develop and maintain lists of schedules for responsible tasks
  • Management of laboratory equipment schedules by use of management of calibration/maintenance tracking program/software, temperature monitoring system, and pipette calibration program, ensuring that calibrations are correct and current
  • Develop and maintain training checklists and SOPs necessary to perform responsibilities
  • Ensure metrology associates have thorough understanding of expected outcomes, troubleshooting, and data analyses by serving as mentor and coach
  • Ensure metrology associates are always up to date with training and competency assessments for their areas of responsibility
  • Monitor department productivity and ensure appropriate quality metrics are met
  • Resolve technical problems and ensure that appropriate corrective and preventive actions are taken when deficiencies or errors are found ensuring routing and escalation to department supervisors/manager
  • Demonstrates strong client service skills, teamwork, and collaboration
  • Ensure completion of certification checks and documentation of all equipment requiring unscheduled repairs/maintenance documenting that equipment is ready to be placed back into service
  • Support development of system and process improvements that would enhance compliance to requirements
  • Adhere to all quality and safety standards, as well as ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies
  • Adhere to policies and protocols in the laboratory
  • Represent department and the organization favorably and in accordance with established company standards and associate attributes at all times
  • Understand and demonstrate proficiency with quality monitoring activities such as quality indicators and quality reporting related to equipment and monitoring such as KPIs for Quality Meeting
  • Create and modify calibration procedures by determining metrology requirements from manufacturer's manuals, laboratory methods, or system requirements
  • Troubleshoot, inspect, and repair test and measurement equipment in support of new projects
  • Work with equipment users, engineers, and other technicians in the proper operation and selection of test and measurement equipment
  • Schedules and monitors contractors for calibrations, validations, and repairs as required
  • Communicates Metrology area needs to Facilities, Testing and Manufacturing personnel
  • Contacts suppliers/vendors as required
  • Participate in data reporting, internal or external client reports as requested, using Excel or other software utilized for reporting, trending, and tracking
  • Participate in continual quality improvement projects company-wide
  • Participate in creation/revision of SOPs for the department as required and ensure policies and procedures are monitored and updated to include regulatory changes
  • Other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications

Basic Minimum Education Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree (BA/BS) in biological, physical, chemical or clinical laboratory science

Basic Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a regulated laboratory (CAP/CLIA and/or GLP), as Laboratory Quality Tech, or similar experience in Laboratory process ownership, e.g. laboratory technical roles, 6 years preferred
  • Working knowledge of good laboratory practices and laboratory instrument operations
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to identify aberrant data and potential quality/compliance concerns escalating to management • Familiarity with six sigma scoring as applied to metrics/KPIs for quality
  • High level of proficiency with commonly used computer programs
  • Ability to work proactively in a self-directed manner, taking initiative as required
  • Ability to make sound decisions with little or no supervision, including generating test data, performing analysis, and escalating when appropriate
  • Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate a keyboard and other office equipment, use a telephone, access file cabinets and other items stored at various levels, including overhead
  • Ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably with sufficient volume to ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone, and in a group setting
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time as necessary in the laboratory (4 or more hours)
  • Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 30 pounds 
  • Physical dexterity sufficient to move body frequently around laboratory equipment and instrumentation
  • Using assistance as available, must have physical ability to push/pull heavy loads (may be in excess of 100 pounds)
  • Ability to continuously operate a personal computer for extended periods of time (4 or more hours)
  • Mental acuity sufficient to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions
