Description
Oracle Health Data Intelligence (HDI) is at the forefront of leveraging data and AI to transform the healthcare and life sciences industries. We’re developing cutting-edge generative AI, NLP, and large language model (LLM) solutions that address some of the most complex challenges in healthcare. As a Principal Applied Scientist (IC4), you’ll play a critical leadership role in designing, building, and scaling AI systems that power clinical decision support, operational optimization, and population health transformation.

This role is ideal for an experienced applied scientist who combines hands-on technical depth with strategic vision. You’ll drive the development of novel modeling techniques, lead complex research and development initiatives, and influence the direction of Oracle’s AI strategy in healthcare. You will collaborate closely with engineering, product, and science leadership to translate real-world clinical and life sciences problems into scalable AI solutions deployed across Oracle’s global healthcare platforms.

Responsibilities Strategic Modeling & Development

Lead the fine-tuning, evaluation, and deployment of large language models (LLMs), small language models, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines for production-scale healthcare use cases.

Architect and guide the development of AI solutions for high-impact applications such as clinical summarization, patient risk stratification, and care recommendation workflows.

Pioneer the use of modular AI frameworks (e.g., LangChain, agentic systems) to enable dynamic and context-aware healthcare solutions.

Technical Leadership & Evaluation

Define evaluation frameworks to assess accuracy, robustness, and safety of models in regulated healthcare environments.

Lead root-cause analyses and model performance reviews, setting standards for evaluation methodologies and optimization cycles.

Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior scientists and engineers, raising the overall technical bar of the team.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Integration

Partner closely with product, engineering, and compliance teams to integrate AI models into Oracle’s cloud-based healthcare ecosystem, ensuring scalability, security, and regulatory alignment.

Represent applied science in cross-organizational forums, influencing roadmap decisions and shaping product strategy through scientific insights.

Innovation & Thought Leadership

Stay ahead of the curve on advances in Generative AI, NLP, and healthcare AI research.

Propose and prototype innovative techniques, contributing to Oracle’s IP through publications, patents, or internal frameworks.

Identify emerging opportunities to apply AI in ways that advance clinical outcomes and operational excellence across healthcare and life sciences.

What You’ll Bring Education

PhD in Computer Science, NLP, Machine Learning, or a related field; OR

Master’s degree with 6+ years of relevant applied AI/ML experience, including leadership of complex modeling efforts.

Experience
  • Demonstrated success training, fine-tuning, or deploying LLMs or small language models at scale.
  • Proven experience designing and evaluating LLM agents for real-world applications, ideally in regulated industries.
  • Deep familiarity with RAG architectures, LangChain, or comparable frameworks.
  • Prior work applying AI/ML in healthcare, bioinformatics, or life sciences is highly desirable.
Skills
  • Expert knowledge of machine learning, NLP, deep learning, and model evaluation techniques.
  • Proficiency in Python, TensorFlow/PyTorch, and open-source LLM tooling.
  • Strong ability to articulate complex technical concepts to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Experience influencing strategy, mentoring teams, and driving adoption of AI solutions within large organizations.
