Department: Library Public Services

General Statement of Job

The Library Acquisition Technician performs tasks related to the acquisition, processing, cataloging, distribution, and maintenance of library and archival materials, serials and interlibrary loan (ILL) requests.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Edits and/or creates original and copy cataloging records that accurately describe library and archival materials in multiple formats following established standards.
  • Verifies accuracy of materials received against orders placed.
  • Processes physical items according to local procedures including labeling, stamping, and packaging to ship to campus libraries.
  • Creates and edits large scale record sets and imports records into the library management system.
  • Assists with interlibrary loan and serials activities.
  • Assists in monitoring and maintaining records related to expenditures, encumbrances, and assets.
  • Prepares paperwork to support acquisitions including invoices for library and archival materials and for lost or damaged ILL items.
  • Assists in maintaining and providing statistical costs and/or evaluative reports as scheduled or requested.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of procedural improvements, including maintaining documentation.
  • Interacts with the Purchasing, Business Office and Shipping and Receiving departments.
  • Provides and participates in professional development opportunities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  1. To qualify, one of the following must be met:
  2. At least two (2) years of library, archives, or comparable work experience preferred.
  3. Experience with integrated library systems, preferred.
  4. Experience with Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) WorldShare, preferred.  
  • Associate's degree
  • A minimum of 60 earned college hours

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, the Windows environment, internet research skills, and library information systems.
  • Strong proficiency in English.
  • Good spelling, proofreading, and keyboard skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a variety of personnel and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout the college district using own means of reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, library materials and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to apply practical understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Security Sensitive position: all applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.

  • Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.

Physical Requirements

  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force constantly move objects.
  • Ascending or descending ladders and stairs, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Sitting or standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
  • Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
