Description
NYU London is currently recruiting for a part-time lecturer to teach Statistics for Data Analysts as part of NYU Tandon's MS in Management Technology program. Teaching commences in the spring term (Jan - May 2025).
Course Description:
The course is an excellent introduction to statistical tools used in any aspect of business. It covers thoroughly key probability concepts and statistical techniques used in the analysis of financial, economic and accounting data. In addition to descriptive statistics, probability, and hypothesis testing, this course also covers regression analysis and time series analysis with an emphasis on model formulation and interpretation of results. The use of spreadsheets (to facilitate most of the analysis in this class) will be introduced and developed as well through case studies based on real-world data and problems in business and economics, so you will have acquired a working knowledge of spreadsheet after this class. The focus is on understanding underlying concepts rather than on memorizing mathematical formulas while the lectures concentrate on statistical concepts and applications using spreadsheets rather than rigorous math proof for the entire semester.Teaching & Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Summarize and analyze business data using Excel spreadsheets.
- Apply descriptive statistics, probability concepts, and hypothesis testing.
- Formulate, estimate, and interpret regression models in business and industry cases.
- Describe the properties of probabilities of independent and dependent random events
- Analyze time series data to identify trends and patterns.
- Communicate statistical findings and business insights effectively, with emphasis on regression project work.
Teaching Information
Instructors are encouraged to use a variety of pedagogical techniques. This typically includes a combination of lecture- and discussion-based class sessions, as well as the use of student activities, such as debate exercises and flipped classroom environments.
In addition to required midterm and final exams, instructors may use a variety of assignments to assess student comprehension of the course material. These may include online weekly homework, writing assignments, short student presentations and in-class multiple-choice quizzes. Instructors may select the mix that is more appropriate to their teaching methodology.
Instructors should be prepared to teach in-person and simultaneously to be prepared for remote instruction should circumstances require it. NYU uses Zoom as its primary platform for remote instruction.
Expectation Of Hours:
This is a 3 credit course. The semesters are 15 weeks long (14 weeks of teaching plus an exam week) and there are 2hrs 30 minutes of classroom instruction each week.
In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and marking, the instructor is required to hold a minimum of one set 60-minute “office hour” at NYU London per week, during which time she or he will be available to meet with students.
