The Correctional Academy Instructor will provide IT & Instructional Support as a dual-role responsibility for managing the technology infrastructure of the Police Training Unit and assisting in the daily instruction and coordination of Jailer’s Training recruits along with Schoolcraft Police Academy recruits for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. This role combines information technology expertise with law enforcement training support, ensuring the academy operates efficiently and recruits receive both technical and tactical instructions aligned with Michigan Sheriffs' Coordinating & Training Council (MSCTC) and Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) standards.  Additionally, this position delivers professional development training to both law enforcement and civilian leadership.

Required Tasks

  • Maintain and troubleshoot classroom technology, simulation systems, computers, digital devices, AV (Audio / Video) equipment, other training tools.
  • Ensure secure network access and data integrity for police training systems, including VA (Virtual Academy Instruction Systems) and training record databases.
  • Set up and manage video recording systems for training evaluations, including scenario playback and use-of-force reviews. This would be conducted on the FATS (Firearms Training Simulator) machine while also including verbal de-escalation training.
  • Track submissions, notify personnel of approval or denial decisions, register approved individuals for external or internal training courses, send email confirmations, assisting with the preparation of reimbursement documentation, and ensure full follow-through from request to training completion.
  • Coordinate with Wayne County's and/or other agency IT to implement software updates, cybersecurity protocols, and data backup procedures.
  • Provide technical support to officers on classroom instruction, simulators, and online training sessions.
  • Assist certified academy instructors in delivering curriculum on patrol procedures, report writing, ethics, community policing, and related topics.
  • Provide recruits with daily guidance, instruction, and support throughout their academy training.
  • Supervise recruit activities during physical training, scenarios, defensive tactics, and classroom sessions.
  • Monitor recruit performance, maintain attendance and progress records, and report to the Training Supervisor/Coordinator.
  • Ensure training adheres to MCOLES and MSCTC standards and academy policies for certified officers in the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
  • Attend graduations of staff members and work alongside the Training Coordinator and assist with Jailer’s Training graduations.
  • Work closely with recruitment to revise and enhance training materials aimed at improving retention rates among new recruits.
  • Deliver professional development training to both law enforcement and civilian leadership.
  • Perform other administrative duties as assigned by the captain.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree
  • At least five (5) years of experience in Information Technology sector, Criminal Justice background, including:
  • Prior experience in a police academy, training unit environment or communications.
  • Experience with virtual training platforms, scenario-based instruction, and LMS
  • Certified instructor or obtain certification within 12 months. If not a certified instructor, must be willing to attend MSCTC Instructor Development course within 12 months.
  • MCOLES license and/or certifiability strongly preferred.
  • Note: Additional years of experience may be substituted for the required education.
