We are seeking a Laboratory Equipment Repair Team Leader on a full-time, permanent contract to manage and develop a small, skilled team responsible for maintaining and repairing a wide range of laboratory equipment across the Institute. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced technician with strong leadership skills to play a key role in supporting world-class science

About Us

Science Support Services oversee the maintenance and servicing of laboratory equipment across the Institute, procuring service contracts through OEMs and trusted third-party providers to ensure value for money. The Laboratory Equipment Repair Team provide first line maintenance to our general laboratory equipment, providing cost savings to our laboratory users by reducing downtime and saving money over external contracts. The work can be extremely varied, including electrical and mechanical components. The team also provides a pipette calibration service.

Types of equipment the team maintain and repair include: Centrifuges, Ice machines, Laboratory gas systems, Local Exhaust ventilation systems, pipettes, compressors, UPS systems, height adjustable benches along with many other more bespoke equipment.

What you’ll be doing

  • Managing 2 technicians to respond promptly and effectively to equipment maintenance requests
  • Providing a high level of customer service to our laboratory managers
  • Use existing resource management system to ensure jobs are completed in a timely fashion
  • Ensuring safe working practices are developed and followed
  • Coordinating the moving of large pieces of laboratory equipment using a variety of lifting equipment
  • Developing the skills and competence of the team to provide the best service

Essential Skills

  • Skilled instrument technician
  • Demonstrable experience in the skills and requirements of equipment calibration
  • Experience of (laboratory) equipment repair both mechanical and electrical
  • Skilled at working to fine detail
  • Experienced and skilled in coordinating and allocation of a complex workload
  • Experienced and competent in the supervision of staff
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • Competent in producing risk assessments and the development of safe operating procedures
