Summary
Michigan Technological University is seeking a part-time (0.5 FTE) position that serves as an advocate and technical resource for Michigan’s local (city, village, county) agencies. The position will provide engineering technical support for activities underway at the Center for Technology & Training, which includes work with the Michigan Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), the Great Lakes Environmental Infrastructure Center (GLEIC), the Bridge Load Rating Program, the Roadsoft asset management software package, and other research projects. The position requires a strong background in civil engineering with an emphasis in transportation (roads or bridges), or environmental infrastructure (drinking water, sewer, and storm water systems).
Responsibilities and Essential Duties
1. Organize, coordinate, facilitate, and/or lead continuing education and outreach webinars, workshops, conferences, and other training events at a variety of locations throughout Michigan
2. Create, design, and present transportation or environmental infrastructure-related training materials at webinars, workshops, and conferences throughout Michigan and nationally
3. Participate in research-related activities awarded to the Center for Technology & Training (CTT) in conjunction with other staff and faculty, including proposal writing, conducting research, planning and management of research projects, report preparation, and presentation of findings on an as-needed basis
4. Provide engineering technical assistance to Michigan’s local agencies on transportation, drinking water, wastewater, and storm water-related issues on an as-needed basis
5. Provide technical expertise for engineering-related software development projects
6. Deliver program-related presentations to clients and related professional organizations
7. Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and student assistants
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures
• Bachelor’s degree from ABET accredited college in civil engineering with a strong background in transportation (construction, geotechnical, structural, pavements, or transportation) or a strong background in drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
• Michigan Professional Engineer License or ability to secure one through reciprocity
Required Experience
- • A minimum of 7 years of experience in the design, construction, or planning of transportation, or drinking water, or wastewater projects
- Professional experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Experience delivering training or education programs in a professional environment.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
- • Advanced degree
- Experience developing and presenting training material for professional audiences as a subject matter expert
- Experience in writing proposals and/or technical research reports
- Experience in project management
- Experience with projects at the county, city, or state level
- Water or wastewater operator certification and/or experience
- Experience preparing state-revolving loan funding applications
- Experience managing municipal or utility facility budgets

- Demonstrated ability and willingness to devote up to 15% of time to travel
- Possess a valid driver’s license and meet Michigan Tech University’s vehicle use requirements

• Demonstrated ability to speak before large and small groups of people
