Detailed Description:The Department of English at the University of San Diego seeks an Assistant Professor with expertise in the Literatures and Cultures of the Americas before 1900 to begin in Fall 2026. We seek a scholar whose research is committed to comparative, multiracial, multiethnic, multilingual and/or interdisciplinary approaches. We are especially interested in innovative approaches to the field, including work on: frontiers, diaspora, expansionism, empire, ecocriticism, and hemispheric or transatlantic literary cultures.
The candidate will find enriching opportunities to contribute to burgeoning interdisciplinary minors in Africana Studies, Changemaking, Creative Writing, Film Studies, Latin American Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies. This is a full-time tenure-track position with a 3/3 teaching load, with opportunities for course release for research. The candidate should be prepared to teach surveys of U.S. Literature, in addition to seminars in their specializations. New faculty members will also be expected to engage in shared governance and service at the Departmental, College, and University levels.
The successful candidate will discover opportunities to engage in interdisciplinary research across campus alongside a thriving community of faculty members with similar scholarly and pedagogical interests through venues like the Humanities Center and the Honors Program. We are particularly interested in candidates who might seek to extend their work beyond the classroom by participating in community-oriented approaches to teaching, through on-campus spaces such as the Karen and Tom Mulvaney Center for Community, Awareness and Social Action.

● Hold an advanced degree, preferably a doctorate or other terminal degree. ABD candidates will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
● Have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research, and mentoring undergraduates.

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
