Job Description

CNBC.com is seeking a reporter to cover the intersection of politics and business from our Washington, D.C. bureau. This position offers an opportunity to break exclusive stories, deliver sharp analysis, and explain how government policy affects companies, consumers, and the markets.

The ideal candidate will bring a deep understanding of both the political process and the business world, along with a strong instinct for how decisions made in Washington ripple through the economy. This reporter will be expected to develop and maintain sources inside the Trump administration, Congress, and key federal agencies, and to use those relationships to generate original reporting and scoops. From changes in tax policy to new tariff plans or regulatory decisions at the SEC, this reporter will identify the stories that matter to CNBC’s audience of investors, business leaders, and consumers—and tell them with speed, accuracy, and authority.

This is a role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative newsroom. The successful candidate will work closely with editors and fellow reporters across CNBC to share insights, shape coverage, and bring a business-focused lens to the biggest political stories of the day. They will balance breaking news with ambitious enterprise, contributing reporting that both informs and drives conversation across the network and beyond.

The position is based in Washington, D.C. and follows a Sunday-through-Thursday schedule.

What You'Ll Do:

  • Break exclusive news out of Washington D.C. that impacts business, consumers and the markets. This will range from decisions at the SEC to new tariff plans to tax policy changes coming from the IRS.
  • Develop and maintain sources in the Trump administration, chase scoops and pitch original, business-meets-politics angles on the news of the day.
  • Collaborate with the whole newsroom by sharing your reporting, sources, and insights whenever you can.

Qualifications

What You'Ll Bring:

  • 2+ years of experience in political news, reporting, writing, or producing.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced digital or TV newsroom.
  • A passion for politics and elections, and the ability to cover developing news as it happens.
  • Strong journalistic writing skills, research skills and editorial judgment.
  • The ability to work effectively in a high-intensity environment, often under tight deadline pressures.

You’Ll Stand Out With:

  • Clips of strongly reported well written stories on politics, policy, campaigns or legislation.
  • Established relationships with experts and sources in politics or on Wall Street.
  • An understanding of how public companies operate and how global events impact investor decisions.
  • A BA or college equivalent degree.

Additional Requirements:

  • Interested candidates must submit a resume/CV through nbcunicareers.com to be considered
  • Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States
  • Hybrid: This position has been designated as hybrid, generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week.

This position is eligible for company sponsored benefits, including medical, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), paid leave, and a variety of other discounts and perks.
