Reporting to the Geoscientist, the Environmental Coordinator will contribute to environmental science projects that support permitting, compliance, source control, and sustainable management of HVC’s water resources. This role is responsible for successful implementation of HVC’s surface and groundwater monitoring plans, including project management and technical supervision. Prior experience working with Indigenous Governments and Organizations and their related commercial entities is essential, and the successful candidate will possess demonstrated skills in managing people, processes, and business priorities of environmental science projects. 

The successful candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to implement Water Management and Environmental Management Systems. The position requires collaboration with a variety of people from across the site and with external consultants and contractors. The role requires strong interpersonal skills with outstanding problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills; and a motivated self-starter, who can remain organized and prioritize contending demands in a fast-paced team environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader; lead by example and foster a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on Teck’s values of health, safety, environment, and indigenous and community engagement.
  • Assist senior staff with the design, execution and supervision of environmental science projects of varying complexity.
  • Manage the daily activities of various HVC’s environmental contractors, including field scheduling to meet permit requirements, collaborating with relevant HVC departments to ensure access requirements are met, and conducting field checks to ensure field methods comply with industry standards and HVC’s environmental monitoring/management plans.
  • Execute project management tasks including bid/proposal review, procurement, contractor supervision, invoice review/approval, cost tracking, reporting and issue resolution.
  • Conduct health and safety risk assessments, implement controls to mitigate hazards, conduct inspections, report incidents and (if necessary) participate in investigations.
  • Manage various Environment Department projects as required.
  • Collaborate closely with site departments to facilitate environmental education and compliance assurance.
  • Available for periodic after-hours response to environmental incidents, as needed.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned or required.

Qualifications

  • University Degree or College Diploma in a relevant environmental field, and registration (or immediately registerable) with a regulatory body as defined in the BC Professional Governance Act. 
  • 2+ years of technical experience in environmental monitoring/management at mining and/or heavy industrial sites.
  • Working understanding of relevant federal and provincial environmental legislation, standards, and effective industry practices.
  • Working understanding of sampling procedures, protocols, equipment, and QA/QC requirements that must be followed for environmental monitoring and sample collection in BC.
  • Proficient in environmental data management and Microsoft Office Suite®. Experience with environmental data management software (GIS/EQuIS), data visualization tools (e.g. PowerBI) will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated project management skills including development of Request for Proposal (RFP) and Expression of Interest (EOI) documents, bid review, contractor supervision, cost tracking and reporting.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making abilities with a proven capacity for practical problem-solving. Mechanical aptitude is considered an asset.
  • Ability to liaise with colleagues and contractors on site in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work as part of a team in a diverse workplace.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license, with the ability to safely operate different equipment.
  • Ability to work efficiently with nominal supervision and work independently in outdoor remote locations.
  • Ability to regularly walk over uneven, sloped, rocky, wet or icy ground.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.

Salary Range: CAD $93,000 - $115,000 per year

The actual base salary offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
