About This Role
The Engineering Manager leads one of Boulder Care’s core product-focused engineering teams, driving both team performance and technical execution. This is a player-coach role, and you’ll balance managing and mentoring engineers with staying close to the work through code reviews, architecture discussions, and hands-on technical problem-solving. You’ll ensure the team delivers high-quality, reliable software that supports Boulder’s mission and scales effectively with our growth.
Success in this role
Team Management and Development - 40%
- Manage, mentor, and support a team of engineers, fostering an inclusive, equitable environment where every individual can perform at their best
- Conduct regular 1:1s and provide actionable feedback to support professional growth and performance development
- Set clear goals and expectations aligned with team and company objectives
- Promote psychological safety, accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement
- Partner with the Director of Engineering and other leaders to identify hiring needs and build long-term team capacity
Delivery and Execution - 35%
- Drive day-to-day team operations, including sprint planning, prioritization, and coordination with Product and Design
- Translate strategic goals into actionable engineering roadmaps and ensure timely, high-quality delivery of features and improvements
- Identify bottlenecks and process gaps; implement solutions that improve efficiency, predictability, and quality
- Gather feedback from engineers and cross-functional partners to refine workflows and communication practices
- Track and report team progress using data and metrics to inform planning and decisions
Technical Leadership - 25%
- Provide technical direction and input on architecture decisions, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, and maintainable
- Participate in code reviews, offer hands-on support for complex issues, and maintain technical fluency within the team’s stack
- Contribute to feature development when necessary to support delivery goals or clarify technical requirements
- Encourage adoption of modern engineering practices, tools, and automation that improve developer productivity and code quality.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of experience managing engineers with a focus on both technical excellence and team development
- Strong grasp of the full Software Development Lifecycle and ability to guide teams in applying best practices
- Comfortable leading through change and managing evolving priorities with clarity and focus
- Hands-on experience with architectural decision-making and modern software development practices
- Proven ability to foster inclusive, collaborative team environments where everyone’s voice is heard
- Excellent communication and documentation skills, especially when working across disciplines
Nice to have but not required
- Experience working in healthcare, regulated industries, or building HIPAA-compliant systems strongly preferred
- Familiarity with team metrics and using data to inform decision-making and growth
- Experience with mobile development, especially React Native
Work Environment
- This is a fully remote role but we are currently only hiring candidates located in the following states: AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, ID, IL, KY, MA, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, WA, and WV. Applicants must reside and work in one of those states to be considered.

- Office Requirements: Boulder teammates working with sensitive information must have a dedicated, private workspace with a lockable door and high-speed internet to maintain a secure, distraction-free environment, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and confidentiality standards
- Boulder Care employees are free to use our river-front HQ located in Portland, OR whenever they would like
Expected hours of work
This is a full-time remote position expected to work 40 hours between Monday-Friday.
Compensation
The starting pay range for this position is $170,000 - $190,000; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity grants in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave).
