Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG) invites applications for the position of Research Scientist II to join the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Research Institute (MAPRI). As part of this innovative research team, you will design and implement health services and epidemiology-related research, with a particular emphasis on cancer epidemiology and health services research. This is a full-time position based in our regional office located in Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. with a hybrid work model.
Reporting to the Director, Research Science, the Research Scientist II will build and lead an independent research portfolio, secure external funding through federal grants, foundations, and industry partnerships, and disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. In addition to externally funded research, the Research Scientist may contribute to intramural projects relevant to MAPRI and MAPMG and serve as a consultant and liaison to MAPMG physicians and leadership, applying MAPRI resources to support research initiatives.
You Can Expect To:
- Prepare grant proposals, internal reports, and peer-reviewed publications independently and collaboratively
- Submit at least one extramurally-funded grant application per year as Principal Investigator (PI) and at least one as co-PI or site-PI, achieving funding for 75-80% of annual effort within five years
- Provide consultation on study design, analysis plans, and interpretation of results to MAPMG physicians, leaders, Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States (KPMAS) managers, clinicians, and committees
- Initiate collaboration with external partners, including local, state, and federal agencies, other Kaiser Permanente regions, research networks, and academic or healthcare system partners.
- Publishes one to two first-author papers per year and one to two collaborative papers annually
- Presents research findings (poster or oral) at least one national scientific meetings per year as first author.
- Collaborative with MAPRI teams, data analysts, and project managers to ensure research projects meet timelines and objectives and provide mentorship to MAPMG and KPMAS staff, clinician researchers, and research interns to support research activities
- Provide service to the scientific community through peer reviews (at least two per year) and may serve on expert or grant review panels
What Is Required:
- PhD in Epidemiology, Health Services Research, Nursing, or related discipline is required; OR MD/DO with an advanced degree (e.g., MPH, MAS, MS, PhD)
- Minimum of seven (7) years of post-doctoral research experience in epidemiology, health services research, or related field is required; experience in a health system research setting preferred
- Career publication record of more than 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts, including at least six as first author
- Interest and expertise in infectious disease epidemiology or infectious disease health services research
- Demonstrated ability to design and lead multiple original research studies and publish results.
- Successful track record of extramural grant funding, including federal grants, as Principal Investigator
- Expertise in statistical techniques, study designs, and research methods used in epidemiology and health services research
- Must be able to go into the regional office located in Capitol Hill, Washington D.C. on an as-needed basis
- Candidates must either currently live in or be willing to relocate to the Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia area
- Must provide documentation of the Covid vaccine 2-dose series (or J&J 1-dose) prior to October 1, 2023, or documentation for 1-dose of the most current Covid vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) as a condition of employment. Must provide documentation for the influenza vaccine as a condition of employment.

The starting annual salary for this position ranges from $152,776.24 to $190,970.12 depending on circumstances including an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, market data, and other relevant factors.
