The Chief Operating Officer (COO) reports to, the President of Howard University Hospital (HUH) The COO is a member of the Executive Committee and has direct responsibility for HUH ancillary and support services departments, including the laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, nutrition services, environmental services, facilities and plant operations, rehabilitation services and cardiopulmonary services. In addition to direct line operational responsibility, the COO will provide leadership support for strategic planning activities, and business development initiatives to foster growth of inpatient and outpatient services and programs. The COO will also take a leadership role to support system-wide projects and community collaborative. When needed, the COO will partner with the designated staff to completed Certificates of Need (CONs) and business development congruent with the hospital and the HUH’s strategic plans. As a member of the Executive Council, the COO will assume rotating Administrator on Call responsibilities. The COO will work to ensure that the critical success factors are achieved (i.e. Best place to work, Most extraordinary experience, Superior outcomes, Financial success for reinvestment and a growing organization vital to the community.
Ensures excellence in hospital operations by providing technical expertise, results-oriented leadership and a working style that promotes a spirit of collaboration to ensure integration of effort and teamwork among support and ancillary department/services and clinical service areas. Ensures departments operate safety and cost-effectively and achieve quality, safety, satisfaction and financial performance measures.
Recruits, develops and retains leadership and talented staff in assigned areas. Coaches and supports team and individual staff development. Understanding the importance of holding staff accountable for performance, as well as, comfortably and sincerely recognizes and celebrates staff and team successes.
Partners with the leadership team to review and facilitate process and operational improvements related to hospital performance, as well as to support initiatives and takes actions to expand access to care and to promote population-based care.
Ensures high level of patient, employee and physician satisfaction.
Provides executive leadership for strategic planning including facilitating planning retreats and linking planning activities to department operations via the business plan review process.
Ensures that appropriate resources are available to facilitate excellent patient care. 10%
Provides executive leadership to promote business development, clinical growth and new program development.
Provides executive leadership for key organizational projects working in partnership with stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient planning and successful project implementations that achieve on time and on budget targets.
Shares executive team responsibilities with other Executive Council members (including: Rounding, Regulatory and Accreditation Compliance and Survey Readiness, AOC rotation, etc.)
General Direction: The incumbent exercises wide latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments.
- Significant healthcare leadership experience ideally garnered in a managed care, provider or healthcare services setting
- Comfort with launching and leading large-scale operations while driving transformation and change management initiatives
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of healthcare financial and operational data and reporting as well as healthcare technology
- Ability to work independently and handle a multi task environment
- Ability to quickly gain credibility and establish the required relationships to influence and generate results; can quickly influence market partners to take action
- High emotional intelligence, the ability to forge meaningful relationships, and success navigating diverse stakeholder groups
- Strong communication skills: oral and written
- A natural comfort getting into the details of operations to drive execution, along with the ability to quickly pivot between strategy and operations
- Proficient in PC skills in a Window environment (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint at a minimum) and email programs.
- Required Qualifications: Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in Business or Healthcare Administration
- Minimum years of experience required, and what type of experience qualifies
- 10 years of healthcare experience, hospital experience preferred
- 7+ years of management experience
Compliance Salary Range Disclosure
Compensation Range: $300,000 - $350,000
