The Opportunity

Vermilion Energy has an exciting opportunity in the Calgary office, seeking a Legal Counsel. This role will report directly to the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary and be an integral part of the Corporate Legal Team. The Legal Counsel will focus on supporting the company’s legal requirements, including acquisitions & divestments, operations, marketing, joint venture, land and securities matters. You will provide timely, practical, and business-focused legal advice to internal stakeholders, helping to manage risk and enable efficient decision-making. The successful candidate will join a team that values its people and provides work with purpose.

What you will do

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in oil and gas legal matters, providing guidance and support to internal stakeholders
  • Provide strategic legal support for acquisitions, divestments, and joint ventures, including due diligence, drafting, and negotiation of agreements
  • Interpret, draft, and negotiate a wide variety of upstream commercial agreements related to exploration, development, and production activities
  • Provide legal support to the marketing team and assist in negotiating a range of specialized and non-specialized legal agreements
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Canadian and international business units, business development, and finance teams to align legal advice with business objectives
  • Assist with corporate compliance, governance, securities, and risk management as required

What you will bring

  • Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor degree from accredited law school
  • Active membership in the Law Society of Alberta
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience with an oil and gas operational focus, including industry agreements, contract negotiation and drafting
  • Experience with international, finance, securities, and governance would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver practical, solution-oriented advice in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills with a collaborative mindset
