Position Summary

Tangentyere Council Aboriginal Corporation (TCAC) is a community controlled Public Benevolent Institution delivering human services and social enterprise activities for the benefit of Aboriginal people from the Alice Springs Town Camps, urban Alice Springs, and Central Australia.

Tangentyere Council deliver a range of Youth, Families & Community Safety (YFCS) services across Town Camps and Alice Springs, supporting children, young people, families, and communities through the delivery of daytime and after-hours services focussed on recreation, diversion, out of home care, community safety and family support programs.

The Coordinator is responsible for direct staff management and operational oversight of services within their designated portfolio, working with guidance from the Assistant Manager. The coordinator will collaborate with other Coordinators to maintain integrated, high-quality service delivery across the YFCS division and are committed to increasing access children, young people, and communities across Alice Springs, ensuring alignment with organisational priorities.

Key responsibilities include oversight of operations of services, supervision of staff with varying experience levels, supporting professional development and capacity building of staff, managing performance, and overseeing program planning and delivery inclusive of procurement and fiscal management. The role requires strong verbal and written communication skills with experience writing reports and high-level briefings, leadership experience in service delivery, and demonstrated capability in cross-cultural engagement, particularly in developing and implementing youth or social programs alongside Aboriginal communities. The Coordinator will have a demonstrated understanding of therapeutic approaches to service delivery and demonstrated experience in managing and deescalating crisis and conflict.

The position requires strategic knowledge of the youth, community and community safety services in Central Australia, along with high-level skills in leadership, assessment, program design, and culturally safe, trauma-informed practice. Coordinators work collaboratively within a team, contributing across service areas and taking responsibility for assigned portfolios such as Community Safety, Youth Services, or specialist programs based on program needs and individual strengths.

Out-of-hours work is required, including two weekday evenings until 9:00pm and participation in a 7-day on-call roster.

As part of your role, you will be working with children, people with a disability and people who are vulnerable. It is your obligation to always ensure their safety and report any concerns in line with our duty of care obligations. We have zero tolerance when it comes to abuse of any kind and will take disciplinary action, including and up to termination of employment, should we determine that abuse has taken place or there has been a failure to report any suspected or alleged abuse.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily program operations within the assigned portfolio (Community Safety or Youth Services), ensuring cultural safety and alignment with organisational priorities.
  • Manage and support staff through effective recruitment, capacity building, training, and performance processes while promoting a positive, safe workplace culture.
  • Contribute to planning, coordination, and resource sharing across the YFCS Leadership Team to ensure cohesive, integrated service delivery.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen service responsiveness and collaboration.
  • Apply trauma-informed approaches, including conflict resolution and crisis de-escalation in services and staff management.
  • Lead divisional advancement projects and carry out additional responsibilities as required to support YFCS operations and priorities.
  • Assist with achieving quality management objectives across the organisation.
  • Assist with achieving safeguarding objectives across the organisation.
  • Assist with achieving compliance objectives across the organisation.
  • Other reasonable duties as required.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Required

  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Youth Work, Education, Community Development, or extensive relevant experience delivering Youth or Community related services.
  • Extensive experience leading diverse teams, resolving conflicts collaboratively, and coaching staff for growth.
  • High level understanding and demonstrated experience of working with a trauma informed practice.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering youth and or community services in a cross-cultural context – preferably with Aboriginal people and communities.
  • Demonstrated experience cultivating cultural safety and positive workplace culture.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective relationships with a range of stakeholders (internal and external).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including advanced computer literacy and report writing skills.
  • Current NT Drivers Licence, NT Working with Children (Ochre) Card, satisfactory Police Check, and proof of full (3) vaccination against COVID-19.

Desired

  • Qualification and/or knowledge in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) framework for responding to client incidents.
  • Previous experience in the Northern Territory and/or Central Australian context, particularly in relation to managing and developing staff in a cross-cultural context.
  • An understanding of Aboriginal culture as well as a broad range of contemporary issues affecting Central Australian Aboriginal people.
  • Current First Aid Certificate, or ability and willingness to attain.
