The Role

MQ Health is seeking one part time Structural Heart Fellow to provide clinical services in the Interventional Cardiology team. As part of MQ Health, the Fellow is responsible for providing and assisting with high-quality clinical assessment, management, and consultation for patients with SHD at Macquarie University Hospital and Clinics. The Fellow will also:

  • Participate in and contribute to the Structural Heart Team meetings.
  • Provide education, supervision and support to junior doctors and students.
  • Engage in ongoing clinical and translational research in SHD.
  • Contribute to quality assurance and improvement activities at discipline and program levels.

Macquarie University Health’s Cardiology departments provide highly specialised care in Interventional Cardiology, Structural Cardiology, Cardiac Electrophysiology, and Cardiac Imaging, alongside excellent general cardiology care. The Fellow will join an established multidisciplinary Heart Team that delivers cutting-edge care for patients with structural heart disease, particularly valvular heart disease.

About You

You will be an aspiring interventional cardiologist, who is committed to clinical care, education and research. You will be keen to work in an innovative multidisciplinary environment and be passionate about providing patient centred care. You will have experience working within busy inpatient settings, while balancing supervision, teaching and mentoring of junior staff and medical students.

Key Accountabilities include (not limited to)

  • Provide clinical services within scope of practice as granted by the MQ Health Medical Advisory Committee and approved by the Macquarie University Hospital Board.
  • Participate in inpatient and outpatient management of patients with SHD, under supervision of senior staff specialists.
  • Perform and interpret echocardiography, with a focus on transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) for structural interventions.
  • Participate in case conferences, preparing and presenting relevant materials and recording meeting outcomes.
  • Provide specialist liaison and consultation services to MUH accredited practitioners and external referrers.
  • Liaise effectively with allied health professionals and the broader multidisciplinary team.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete electronic medical records.
  • Participate in handover, ensuring safe communication of patient care issues.
  • Contribute to discharge planning, continuity of care, and communication with GPs, families, and carers.
  • Participate in on-call rosters as required, responding promptly to urgent situations.

To Apply

To be considered for this position, you will demonstrate the below requirements in your CV and a 1-2 page cover letter:

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification and registration as a medical practitioner in Australia
  • Completed Basic Physician Training
  • Successful completion (or working towards) of FRACP written and clinical examinations.
  • ≥2 years of Advanced Training in Cardiology through the RACP (preferred).
  • Proven commitment to education and research.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a wide range of stakeholders including patients and other health professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to continuous improvement, evidence-based practice and promoting a culture of safety, quality, innovation and best practice in clinical practice, teaching and research.
  • Commitment to uphold and be a steward of the Mission, Vision and Values of MQ Health.
