In collaboration with Physician Chiefs, this position oversees patient care management and ensures that professional nursing is practiced in accordance with established standards of regulatory and nursing standards of practice at UMMHC. S/He is responsible for multiple units, Nursing Supervisors as well as the Acute Care Float Pool. Goals will target improvements in patient access/throughput, regulatory readiness, acute inpatient care quality metrics, budget and human resources management. S/He ensures the efficient day-to-day operational function of assigned areas by establishing an environment that fosters interdisciplinary patient/family centered care. As a member of the nursing department’s executive leadership team, participates in planning True North alignment by coordinating activities with other patient care units in related departments.I. Major Responsibilities:
- Evaluates patient care needs across multiple units and ensures staffing utilization meets patient requirements.2. Collaborates with physician and nursing “flow champions” to efficiently admit, transfer and discharge patients.3. Identifies and plans programs, equipment, facility, staffing needs which supports high quality, safe patient care in collaboration with nursing colleagues, physicians, therapists, and administrative personnel. 4. Coordinates clinical practice and deployment of resources across units to ensure ongoing implementation of the nursing process.5. Serves as a role model and resource for less experienced managers in assisting them to meet the responsibilities of their positions.6. Develop process for regular communication and meetings with management team.7. Regularly attends departmental huddles.8. Establishes and maintains effective communications within the department and with other departments.9. Serves as management’s contact for the various unions existing within Nursing, including negotiations, grievances etc. 10. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with community agencies, groups, professional affiliations, etc., as appropriate.11. Identifies community needs and trends, and develops programs to meet those needs. Investigates service expansion, recommends new programs, and oversees implementation as opportunities present themselves.12. Provides updates for Daily Safety Briefing, or attends as designee.
- Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.2. Develops and recommends the budgets for the areas managed. Manages activities to assure financial goals are met.3. Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.4. Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation, and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.5. Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.6. Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.7. Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.8. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.9. Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.10. Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.11. Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.12. Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.13. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.14. Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

Ii. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Master’s degree in Nursing or Master Degree in a related field.
2. Licensed to practice Nursing in the State of Massachusetts
Experience/Skill:
Required:
1. Minimum of 8 years of progressive and directly relevant experience in the field of specialty.
2. Minimum of 5 years of Nursing Leadership experience within a hospital setting.
3. Broad and thorough knowledge of the discipline of Nursing.
4. Strong analytical skills required to perform various data analysis techniques, review statistical and budgetary information and synthesize information appropriately. Knowledge of Healthcare accounting techniques, cost/benefit comparisons, analysis of budget variances and staffing resources.
5. Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills to provide effective participative leadership and to interact with patients, families, physicians, and other visitors and staff.
6. Working knowledge of computers, including spreadsheet and word processing software
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Position is primarily sedentary, with occasional standing and walking required. Position requires work indoors in a patient care or office environment. Position requires the frequent use of the computer and therefore requires being able to use keyboard, printer and reading of developed materials.
